North Alabama city proposes $2.2 million in new pay for its employees
About 400 current Madison city employees could see raises beginning this fall if the city adopts “market-aligned” pay scales recommended by a consultant.
The raises would cost $2.2 million in the first budget year and a smaller, yet-to-be-determined annual new amount thereafter due to mandatory performance increases and cost-of-living adjustments, according to a recent presentation to city councilors.
New pay schedules would go into effect for general personnel, police and fire employees, designed to bring grades and steps into alignment with wages for similar jobs in other cities and the local market, according to human resources director Megan Zingarelli. Elected officials’ pay would be unaffected.
