No longer No. 1, where does Huntsville rank among Best Places to Live?
Huntsville is no longer the best place to live in the United States, according to rankings released Tuesday from U.S. News & World Report that crowned the Rocket City as the best last year.
Instead, Huntsville is now the second-best place to live in the United States.

It was a soft descent from the top spot for Huntsville, which finished behind Green Bay, Wisc., in the rankings that consider four categories: Quality of Life, Value Index, Job Market Index and Desirability Index.
Alabama’s largest city, Huntsville has ranked in the top 15 Best Places to Live for six straight years and the top three for three straight years. Prior to being No. 1 last year, Huntsville ranked No. 3 in 2021.
U.S. News & World Reports ranked the country’s top 150 most populous metropolitan areas in developing its Best Places to Live list. Huntsville’s metro area includes Madison and Athens.
Other Alabama cities on the list were Birmingham at No. 80, Montgomery at No. 94 and Mobile at No. 115.
Green Bay, Huntsville and third-place Raleigh & Durham, N.C., each finished with an overall score of 6.9.
Boulder, Colo., ranked fourth and Sarasota, Fla. fifth. Ranked Nos. 6-10 were Naples, Fla., Portland, Maine, Charlotte, N.C., Colorado Springs, Colo., and Fayetteville, Ark.
Florida has four cities in the top 20, including Melbourne and Jacksonville at Nos. 15 and 16. Knoxville is the top-ranked city in Tennessee at No. 21 while Savannah is the top city in Georgia at No. 37. Jackson is the top city in Mississippi at No. 120 – one spot ahead of Gulfport-Biloxi.
“This year’s rankings are a reflection of the current economic, social and natural factors that impact a place’s livability for its residents,” Devon Thorsby, real estate editor at U.S. News, said in a press release accompanying the rankings. “People are considering more than housing when they look at an area’s affordability – they want to know how much goods cost in that area. The ever-present risk for severe weather and a community’s ability to recover – coupled with that area’s opportunities for social activities – are also taken into account when evaluating a best place to live.”
U.S. News said it expanded its data points this year to better encapsulate a place’s strengths and weaknesses.
Data collection includes information from public surveys as well as the National Weather Service, Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Census Bureau, the FBI, Sharecare, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and U.S. News’ rankings for best high schools and hospitals.
