No charges will be filed in deadly shootout at Birmingham convenience store

No charges will be filed in the shooting death of a 25-year-old man outside a Birmingham convenience store.

Quintez Deshawn Ladd was killed in an exchange of gunfire with another man on March 27 at Smart Food Mart on 20th Street in Ensley.

Birmingham police on Tuesday announced the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office had ruled the deadly shooting justifiable.

Both men were armed and shot at each other, and both men were struck. The other man’s injuries are not life-threatening.

The surviving man’s name has not been released.

The shooting happened just before 4:30 p.m. that Wednesday.

Authorities arrived at the store to find Ladd unresponsive on the ground. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service rushed him to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:18 p.m.

The other man at the hospital by private vehicle.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many shots were fired, but crime scene technicians put out at least 28 evidence markers.

Of Birmingham’s 35 homicides this year, four have now been ruled justifiable.
