No April 15 deadline: Tax filing day changed for 2023
April 15 is the traditional day for anyone wanting to file their taxes without requesting an extension. But, as it was last year, that deadline can sometimes be tweaked.
The filing deadline to submit 2022 tax returns or an extension to file and pay any taxes owed is Tuesday, April 18 for most taxpayers.

The change has to do with Emancipation Day, a holiday that celebrates the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia. By federal law, Washington D.C. holidays impact tax deadlines for everyone in the same way as federal holidays. April 15 is a Saturday and Emancipation Day falls on Monday, April 17th, moving the tax deadline to Tuesday, April 18.
Taxpayers requesting an extension have until Monday, Oct. 16 to file.
The IRS will begin accepting and processing tax returns on Jan. 23.

One group will see a day, however. Due to the 2015 PATH Act passed by Congress, taxpayers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit won’t be receive their refunds until at least mid-February. The extra time is meant to help prevent fraudulent refunds.
Where’s My Refund? should show an updated status by Feb. 18 for most early EITC/ACTC filers. The IRS expects most EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards by Feb. 28.
