No ambulance called for overdose victim at illegal Walker County gambling den, sheriff says

Following an apparent drug overdose at an illegal gambling den, the Walker County Sheriff’s Office shut down the establishment and arrested six people with outstanding warrants.

In a Facebook post about the situation, the sheriff’s office said that “it was reported to authorities that no ambulance was called for the overdose victim to avoid drawing the attention of law enforcement. The overdose victim was revived.”

The post does not make clear when the reported overdose occurred, but said that Sheriff Nick Smith, the Narcotics Division and other units shut down the establishment on Saturday evening.

At the site on Mays Road, investigators found 35 electronic gaming machines. These were described as “essentially slot machines where cash is inserted directly into the machines.”

Of the six arrested, four had warrants with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office and two had warrants with the Jasper Police Department.

“Gambling via the use of predominately chance electronic gaming machines, along with cash payouts remains illegal in Walker County and enforcement will continue as necessary,” the sheriff’s office said in the post.

Smith has previously said he will not tolerate gambling activity he deems illegal under state law.

In April 2019, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall praised the Walker County Sheriff’s Office for taking action against a Jasper business offering electronic bingo.
