No. 2 Mobile Christian stays perfect, routs Monroe County
No. 2-ranked Mobile Christian used barely 2½ minutes and eight plays to take a 28-0 lead by early in the second quarter and went on to beat Monroe County 57-8 Friday night at Harrison Stadium.
During that span, the Leopards (5-0, 3-0 3A Region 1) got three touchdowns from P.J. Brown on runs of 8, 2 and 10 yards and Brown threw a block to erase a Tigers defender on Jordan Woullard’s 90-yard sprint to the end zone.
Behind its smashmouth offensive line, Mobile Christian finished with 460 yards of total offense, almost perfectly balanced with 250 on the ground from nine ballcarriers to go with Damien Gatson’s 10-of-15 passing night for 210 yards. The 57 points are the most the Leopards have scored in a game in coach Ronnie Cottrell’s eight years at the school, as are the 222 points in the first five games.
Aiden Ransom scored from 5 yards out, Aaron Rogers from 16 yards out, Gavin Weinshenker from 17 yards away and linebacker Bradley Tanner finished the rout with a 29-yard interception return late in the third quarter for a 57-8 lead before the fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
“This is the best team I’ve had since I’ve been here,” Leopards coach Ronnie Cottrell said after a fifth straight rout by a combined 222-35. “That’s the fifth straight week we played well early. It’s not a deep team but it’s a very, very good football team.”
It may not be deep but it is equipped to go a long way, as acting Monroe County coach Labary Jones observed afterward.
“We knew coming in they had a great football team,” Jones said. “You could see it on film. Then we get here and they’re even better. That’s a small college team over there. They’ve got big linemen who can block and skill people who can fly.”
Play of the game: Woullard’s 90-yard TD run in the first quarter as Mobile Christian took a 14-0 lead on its first two plays. Brown’s block on the outside sprung Woullard to the end zone and gave him more rushing yardage on one play than in the first four games combined (42).
By the numbers: Minus 17, rushing yards by the Tigers … 5, turnovers by Monroe County, three interceptions and two fumbles. The Leopards converted four of the turnovers into touchdowns … 56-6, Mobile Christian’s record since 2000 when scoring at least 50 points.
Statistically speaking: Sema’j Law led Mobile Christian with 67 yards on six carries and Weinshenker had 42 yards on seven carries. The Tigers’ JaCorey Stallworth threw a 78-yard TD pass to Byron Hollenger in the second quarter to make it 35-8.
Tough times: Jones served as Monroe County’s head coach in the absence of Shannon Felder, whose mother had an apparent stroke Thursday.
“He’s deeply saddened,” Jones said. “He’s got to make some tough decisions.”
The Tigers’ JaMarcus Burke also suffered a scary injury when he was hit by Floyd-Dawens Boucard on a kickoff return and fell face down on the turf. He complained of neck pain, was cautiously placed on a spinal board and his helmet taped down but moved his feet and lifted his arms as he was taken off the field on a stretcher to applause from both sides.
“He got some X-rays,” Jones said. “He’s talking. I think he was just scared more than anything. His helmet came up under his throat.”
Coachspeak: “At this point, we’re being a very physical football team on both sides of the ball. Both sides are getting their weight on top of the other team and getting movement.” — Cottrell.
Next week: Mobile Christian visits Orange Beach and Monroe County (1-3, 0-3) visits Escambia County.
