No. 10 Leeds dominates second half to knock off Springville

Leeds dominated the second half, allowing Springville nine offensive snaps and one first down on two possessions, on the way to a 23-7 win on the road on Friday.

The Green Wave, ranked 10th in Class 5A improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Region 6, held Springville (1-2, 0-1) to 75 total yards on the night.

“That’s the kind of football we like,” said Leeds head coach Jerry Hood.

Leeds cemented the game with a drive covering 65 yards, beginning at the 1:45 mark of the third quarter and ending when quarterback Conner Nelson dove over the goal line with 4:51 left on the stadium clock.

Nelson finished with 215 yards rushing and throwing, accounting for all three Leeds touchdowns — two on the ground and one through the air.

The Green Wave defense didn’t need much support, limiting Springville back Mahlon Alverson to 38 yards on 19 carries. Springville quarterback Jacob Conner scored the Tigers’ lone TD, which came at the end of a 31-yard drive following a short Leeds punt.

“That’s as good of a defensive front as you’re going to see,” said Springville head coach Jon Clements. “I thought our guys kept battling. I thought our guys kept fighting tonight. That’s a lot of punch coming from that other side.”

The Green Wave scored touchdowns on its first two possessions in the second half. The first came on a 52-yard pass from Nelson to freshman Taylon Gaiter. Nelson ran it in himself from 5 yards out on the second possession.

After Conner’s TD, Leeds executed a 2-minute drill that ended with an Avery Langford field goal from 38 yards out.

Leeds will return home to face St. Clair County next Friday. Springville will travel to face Southside in Gadsden.
