No. 1 Jasper holds off Scottsboro to win 5A state title
Most Valuable Player Mia Hollingsworth and Missy Odom each scored 16 points Saturday morning as top-ranked Jasper held off Scottsboro 48-44 to win the Class 5A state championship.
The Vikings finished 30-4, winning the school’s first girls state title.
Jasper took the lead for good at 43-41 on Hollingsworth’s three-point play with 4:01 left. After a missed Scottsboro shot, the Vikings successfully ran three minutes off the game clock before Odom was fouled and went to the line with 46 seconds left.
She hit both free throws, but Scottsboro’s Caroline Dawson responded with a quick 3 to cut the lead to 45-44 with 36 seconds left. Jasper’s Idaysia Mercer hit one of two free throws, leaving the lead at two, but Scottsboro missed a 3 and Odom followed with two more foul shots. A potential tying 3 from the Wildcats in the final seconds was off target.
