Nike celebrates Alabama HBCUs with new sneaker releases
Nike has released new Terminator shoes that are inspired by Alabama A&M and Tuskegee Universities.
This release is part of the Nike Yardrunner campaign that honors the contributions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This marks the fourth year in a row that Nike has honored HBCUs through the Yardrunner campaign since its launch in 2020, when it was started by HBCU grads who worked at the company. Now, the campaign continues by highlighting HBCU students and alumni who work to uplift the HBCU community.
In 2023, the sportwear brand expanded to five HBCUs including Alabama A&M, Tuskegee University, along with Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Tennessee State University.
The shoes dedicated to the Tuskegee and Alabama A&M feature key markings that are unique to each university.
Alabama A&M University maroon and white colors are key features to the Terminator High shoe with a gold trim on the base of the shoe and an A&M Bulldog on its tongue. The year 1875 is marked on each side of the shoe to highlight the year the school was founded, along with the word “Normalite” on the shoestrings, which is the name for any person who has attended, worked, graduated from the university or someone who loves the school.
Tuskegee University’s Golden Tigers Terminator High shoe features the school colors of crimson and old gold with some white and black trimming. On the back of the left shoe, it says “Tuskegee” and on the back of the right shoe, it says, “Institute”, paying homage to the name of the school before it was changed to Tuskegee University in 1985. However, the lower back bottom corner of the shoe does say 1881, the year the school was founded. The shoestrings say “Ball n’ Parlay”, a song that the university’s band is known for playing at sporting events.
