Nick Saban saw arrogance from Alabama, delivers message; Herbstreit points to trash-talking
Nick Saban said Alabama played with complacency, “almost even arrogance,” during the Crimson Tide’s 40-35 loss to Vanderbilt last week in Nashville.
The “College GameDay” analyst shared a message to his former team on Saturday.
“My message would be this: You’re going to suffer through one of two things in your life,” Saban said during GameDay.” “The pain of discipline, or the pain of disappointment if you don’t have discipline. I think a little more of that in preparation and how they go about it – I think they have good players, and I think they have good coaches. I think they’ll bounce back, and I think this will be a good lesson for them.”
Vanderbilt (3-2, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) had lost all 60 games against AP top-five teams, according to SportRadar. The Commodores hadn’t beaten Alabama on the field in 40 years, but they snapped a 23-game skid making big play after big play to give coach Clark Lea his alma mater’s biggest win ever.
“I saw a little bit of complacency, almost even arrogance after the Georgia win,” Saban said. “This creates a blatant disregard for doing what’s right. Preparing-wise, ready to play with the balance you need, psychologically to be able to compete at a high level. And you have to respect every opponent.
“The thing I always preached to our team was it’s all about what you do. It’s all about how you prepare and nothing you’ve done in the past is never going to impact what happens in the future, so that’s just a learning experience that you are going to have to take with you to improve.”

Kirk Herbstreit has other issues with Alabama this season.
“The trash talking from Alabama,” he started. “The one thing I’d text coach after winning a national championship or big game is, ‘Man, I always respect the way your teams play.’ They way they play. You never used to see them talking to the opponent.
“This Alabama team is more busy talking to the opponent and the opponent’s fans than they are about execution. That’s all brand new, in my opinion.”
Saban also pointed to Vanderbilt’s third-down conversion rate, converting 12 of 18.
“Thirty percent on third-down conversions would be pretty good, but 67 percent, give me a break,” Saban said.
Desmond Howard believes the Tide will move forward.
“When you go from the biggest win of the season to the worst loss of the season in a span of a week,” he said. “When you look at this Alabama team a week ago, they weren’t ready. They weren’t prepared mentally or schematically for Vandy. They didn’t go out in that game with the same energy that they went out in the Georgia game. …
“Learning lesson for Alabama. They’ll move forward. They’ll play better, but they have to understand they take any team for granted.”
The former Michigan star also said the loss would never have happened under Saban.
“I spoke to one of your former players last night, coach,” Howard said to Saban. “He tole me this would never happen because you always preached no matter who the team is, no matter what the logo is, we want to go out there and dominate every single time we take the field. And that was said by your first Heisman Trophy winner, Mark Ingram.”
