Nick Saban provides camp injury updates, comments on WR Thaiu Jones-Bell

Alabama football took the field Thursday to open 2023 fall camp.

While giving his obligatory update on the quarterback competition, head coach Nick Saban provided an injury note. Luckily for the Crimson Tide, the list of unavailable players was quite short:

“Thaiu Jones-Bell had some medical issues so he’s gonna medical this year. I think everybody worked today except for Jamarion Miller. He’ll be out for a couple days. He got a strained quad,” Saban said.

Jones-Bell was a redshirt junior from Hallandale, Fla. His last appearance was in the 2023 Sugar Bowl win over Kansas State. He recorded four catches across three seasons before being left off the Tide’s updated online roster on Thursday morning.

Miller, a sophomore, is coming off a freshman season in which he split time between the running back room and special teams. He tallied 34 touches for 223 total yards and two touchdowns.

Miller is part of what Saban called one of the “strongest positions” in regard to depth at one spot. Alabama is returning Jase McClellan, Roydell Williams and Miller. UA also brought in a pair of five-star freshmen in Justice Haynes, who made an big impact this spring, and summer enrollee Richard Young.

“I actually think there are four guys in the running back room that have really done a good job. Jase has been a really good leader. Roydell has always set a really good example. He’s a good special teams player as well as a good runner. Loves to play on teams, loves to do whatever he can to help the team. Jase has really stepped up and really set a good example.

“The two young players, Justice and Jam, have done really, really well, too,” Saban continued, “Of course, we have a new addition, the new freshman (Young), but he’s probably a bit behind the other guys just from a learning curve standpoint. But I like all those guys.”
