Nick Saban, Pat McAfee on ‘College GameDay:’ ‘The most unlikely bromance of all time’

Could Nick Saban be a better “College GameDay” analyst than he was a coach?

Pat McAfee thinks so.

“He’s been awesome,” McAfee told 247Sports. “He’s gonna be better on TV than he was on the sideline somehow. And that’s obviously a testament to all his hard work.”

The comment was part of a bigger and more in-depth look by 247Sports, which was granted behind-the-scenes access of “GameDay,” at the former Alabama football coach’s transition from the sidelines to the most popular college football pregame show in the country.

If you haven’t noticed, Saban and McAfee appear to be the stars of the show. The end of Saturday’s broadcast from College Station was pure anarchy. The panel – with celebrity guest picker Johnny Manziel – made predictions, McAfee tore off his shirt, Lee Corso dressed like a leprechaun and Saban was having a blast.

A member of the GameDay crew told 247 Sports the “Saban-McAfee dynamic is ‘The most unlikely bromance of all time.”’

Part of the reason, according to the report, is McAfee’s ability to put people at ease.

“Pat has an innate ability to make anybody feel comfortable,” producer Jim Gaiero said, “because Pat’s respectful to him but he’s not kissing his ass. And I think that’s what separates Pat from other people. If Nick Saban is on another show, I bet everybody’s gonna be kissing his butt. But here he’s just one of the guys and we’re gonna bust your stones. I think Pat has this crazy ability to make people like him and like to be open around him.”

Like in his coaching career, Saban, 72, comes prepared. Gaiero revealed Saban makes calls to “sources for information” leading up to the broadcast. He added an Alabama athletic department staffer prepares film for the former coach every Sunday.
