Nick Saban on building respect with Alabama players: ‘You’re helping him’

Alabama football head coach Nick Saban turned 72 on Wednesday. The Crimson Tide faces LSU this week, so most of the day was spent hard at work, preparing for the Tigers.

Quarterback Jalen Milroe discussed the day, noting what he thought Saban would appreciate the most as a birthday present.

“I think the biggest gift he wants is a win this week,” Milroe said. “We all know that in the locker room, but we’re all definitely gonna tell him happy birthday. He’s getting old, but he still acts young, that’s the funny part. He does everything young. He’s a lot of fun.”

During his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, the crew wished Saban a happy birthday. McAfee then asked the coach how he continues to be relatable to his players, and how he maintains the competitive stamina to want to do so at this point in his career.

Saban said he continues to enjoy building the relationships. He also went in on how coaching has changed throughout his life

“I think the sort of key to it all is, you want players to respect you,” Saban said. “There was probably a time when we all coached with a little bit more intimidation to create fear so people would do things the way we wanted because they were afraid not to, I know that’s how it was when I played.

“But I think now, and I enjoy this so much more, is you really want players to respect you, so you’re trying to teach a player to do something, and he sees that it makes him better. So then he has a respect for you, and because he has this respect, he doesn’t want to disappoint you, so you’re helping him, but yet, you’ve created a relationship with him that makes him want to do things at a high level for you on a consistent basis because you helped him get better.”

Saban went on to say that the philosophy has made coaching more fun for both himself and the Crimson Tide’s players.

Alabama faces LSU Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game is scheduled to kick off at 6:45 p.m. CT and will be aired on CBS.
