Nick Saban, Luke Bryan, others encourage young Alabama shark attack victim: ‘You’re a fighter’

A young Alabama shark-bite victim has been receiving encouragement from a growing list of celebrities and college coaches, with upbeat social media messages coming in from figures such as Nick Saban, Kalen DeBoer and country music star Luke Bryan.

In a video message on an Instagram account documenting the recovery of Lulu Gribbin, Bryan said the attack had a personal note for him. “I have a house down on 30A and I have children down there that have played in that water their whole life,” he said.

“I wanted you to know that we are thinking of you and we are praying for you, for your quick recovery, I can’t even imagine what you’ve been through, to go from a wonderful day on the beach to such tragedy,” Bryan said. “It’s hard to wrap my brain around, I just want you to know that I love you and we’re praying for you. We know you’re strong and you’re going to get through this and our hearts are with you and I can’t wait to hug you one of these days.”

Gribbin, a 15-year-old from Mountain Brook, was caught up in a spate of shark attacks that occurred June 7 in Walton County, Fla. Gribbin lost her left hand and most of her right leg in one of the attacks, and a friend swimming with her suffered comparatively minor injuries.

Since then, Gribbin’s family has created a page at www.caringbridge.org where journal updates from family members have provided regular updates on her recovery process. The site also provides information on how to donate to her recovery.

On a related Instagram page, https://www.instagram.com/lulug.strong/, the family has shared other updates including some of the celebrity tributes that have come in recent days. Some are from celebrities such as country music act Lady A, “Yellowstone” actor Josh Lucas and Bryan.

Others come from people prominent in college or pro athletics: Eli Manning, Virginia Tech volleyball head coach Marci Byers, Mississippi State volleyball coach Julie Darty Dennis, basketball star Caitlin Clark, University of Alabama football head Kalen DeBoer, former UA football head coach Nick Saban, UA men’s basketball head coach Nate Oats and even UA mascot “Big Al.”

“Miss Terry and I are certainly wishing for you a very speedy recovery,” said Saban. “We know you’re a fighter, we know that you’re going to prevail through all of this. I want you to know that there are many many people out there that are praying for your speedy recovery. So, God Bless and roll tide.”

On Tuesday Gribbin’s mother, Ann Blair Gribbin, posted on the Caring Bridge site that it had been “a day of milestones.” Her daughter had tried on a prosthetic arm, sat up on the edge of her bed for therapy, stood up for the first time since the attack and spent some time using a wheelchair, encountering therapy dogs and fellow patients.
