Nick Saban gives Matt Eberflus his take on Caleb Williams, uses Peyon Manning as example
Ahead of Hard Knocks’ debut Tuesday night, the NFL shared a preview of what is to come for the Chicago Bears and head coach Matt Eberflus.
It starts with some advice from former Alabama coach Nick Saban about the Bears’ No. 1 overall draft pick Caleb Williams.
The weight of the franchise is now on the shoulders of the former USC and Oklahoma star, who won the 2022 Heisman Trophy with the Trojans.
And that is part of Saban’s point.
“Here’s my theory on why NFL quarterbacks fail at such a dramatic rate,” Saban said to Eberflus. “To me, expectations are a killer. This kid you got — this kid’s got so much media, so much hype, so much expectation on doing well. And he has to develop so quickly to meet the expectations that everybody has for him, it’s almost impossible. The expectations are a killer, but yet — to use your word — development is the key for him.
“Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions when he was a rookie. It’s the most in the history of all. But it didn’t affect him, just like the scoreboard. Scoreboard don’t mean anything until the game’s over.”
The Bears held Williams out of Thursday’s preseason opener in the Hall of Fame Game.
“Hard Knocks’ debuts Tuesday on HBO Max.
