Nick Saban calls Pat McAfee ‘crazy’ for calling the Dawgs before picking Alabama

Pat McAfee was admittedly admittedly when Nick Saban brought up his SEC Championship Game prediction from Saturday’s “College GameDay.”

He wasn’t sure if the Alabama coach approved or not. On Saturday, McAfee trolled Georgia fans by calling the Dawgs only to pick the Crimson Tide to win the game. Alabama won 27-24.

“They showed me what you did before the game when you made your pick,” Saban, who took a dramatic pause, said with a serious look during his Thursday appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“I mean, you have to be crazy to do something like that,” he finished with a smile.”

McAfee, looking relieved, then explained just how unsure he was about what Saban was going to say.

“It was in that moment, I realized you saw that,” McAfee said. “The conversation in my head is, ‘Does he like that or not?’ I was very intrigued to hear your thoughts.”

The ESPN analyst admits he didn’t realize what he was up against Saturday when he made his prediction.

“Yeah, I didn’t know there were that many people there either,” he said. “It wasn’t that packed at the beginning of the program. I had not turned around in a while and when they showed that sky view, it was the entire convention center packed out, that was when it really started getting real. But, coach, I believed. I believed in your team, coach. I genuinely believed.”

On Saturday, McAfee had Georgia fans going.

“Twenty-nine straight wins, back-to-back national championships,” McAfee started before breaking out into song. “What’s that coming down the track. It’s the mean machine and the men in black. Ain’t nothing finer in the land, than a drunk, obnoxious Georgia fan. Go Dawgs. Sic ‘em.”

Then he did a quick 180.

“Give me, Alabama. SEC Champions. … Roll Tide, Roll!”

For the record, here is what the rest of “GameDay” had to say about the Alabama-Georgia game.

“Because of what happened a week ago against Auburn, Nick Saban was able to get that defense together,” Desmond Howard said. “They going to make some corrections, some changes. We don’t know about the physical condition of (Georgia’s Ladd) McConkey or (Georgia’s Brock) Bowers, so I’m going with the Tide. RTR!”

Kirk Herbstreit, on the other hand, believes in Georgia quarterback Carson Beck.

“It’s hard to see Nick Saban and Alabama show up as an underdog. Since ‘08, Nick Saban is 5-2 outright when questioned down and gets his team motivated to show up, play with a chip on their shoulder. You can see that trend continuing. He’s 3-1 against Georgia when he is put in that underdog role, but it’s Georgia, man. I’m believing in Georgia to win this game. Carson Beck gets the hero of the day.”

In the end, Lee Corso went with the Georgia headgear.

“Alabama, this year, is hoping for a shot at the national title. Georgia’s here because they beat everybody else, and they are better. This is a neutral site, right? We’re still in Georgia. Give me the Dawg.”
