Nick Marshall does it again for the Roughriders
For the second game in a row, former Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall sealed a Canadian Football League victory for the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thursday night.
After the Roughriders rallied for 12-11 lead over the Edmonton Elks, Marshall picked off quarterback Taylor Cornelius in the final minute at the Saskatchewan 43-yard line. Two kneel-downs later, the Roughriders had a 3-1 record for the 2023 season.
“That’s something we worked this week in practice — these two-minute situations,” the quarterback-turned-cornerback said.
In Saskatchewan’s previous game, Marshall’s interception in the end zone closed a 29-26 overtime victory against the Calgary Stampeders on June 24.
“He’s got nice ball skills,” Saskatchewan coach Craig Dickenson said on Thursday night. “Nick can finish a game for you. He’s a dangerous DB because if the ball’s close to him, he can catch it. …
“It was a good play by him to finish the game.”

In his fifth CFL season, Marshall has 17 interceptions, including a franchise-record five that he has returned for touchdowns. He made the CFL Players Association all-star team in 2018 and received recognition on the All-West Division team in 2021.
Marshall played quarterback for two seasons at Auburn. In 2013, he passed for 1,976 yards and ran for 1,068 as the Tigers won the SEC title and reached the BCS national-championship game. In 2014, Marshall passed for 2,532 yards and 20 touchdowns and ran for 798 yards and 11 TDs.
Marshall started his pro career as an undrafted rookie with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015. He played almost exclusively on special teams until the last month of the season, then saw regular work with the Jacksonville defense in the final four games. Marshall returned 13 kickoffs for a 26.6-yard average and five punts for a 6.0-yard average for Jacksonville.
The New York Jets signed Marshall off Jacksonville’s practice squad on Oct. 12, 2016. He played in eight of the Jets’ remaining 11 games and was on the field for 106 special-teams plays, but didn’t play with New York’s defense. Marshall returned 12 kickoffs for a 19.0-yard average and six punts for a 6.5-yard average in 2016.
The Jets released Marshall on May 4, 2017, less than a month after he’d been suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the 2017 season for violating the league’s Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances.
Out of football in 2017, Marshall joined the Roughriders in 2018, when he also worked as Saskatchewan’s short-yardage quarterback. Marshall ran for seven touchdowns on 18 carries that season.
The Roughriders host the Stampeders at 6 p.m. CDT July 15 in their next game.
