NFL’s Monday night game to feature 2 kicking Carlsons

When the Green Bay Packers and Las Vegas Raiders square off in Monday night’s NFL game, each will have a kicker from Auburn named Carlson – Daniel for the Raiders and Anders for the Packers.

“To compete all our lives and finally play in a game where we’re actually wearing jerseys to compete against each other is going to be awesome,” Anders Carlson said.

The kicking brothers’ father, Hans Carlson, is a tennis pro and their older brother, Nils Carlson, is a professional soccer goalie, so competition was part of their family life growing up.

“I’m, like, one million-0 in, like, brother-league competition,” Daniel Carlson said, “but we’re 0-0 in football competition.”

And if Anders says Daniel was older and bigger?

“He can make excuses,” Daniel Carlson said. “I can have results.”

Daniel Carlson said it would be different watching his brother kick against the Raiders instead of kicking for Auburn or for the Packers against another NFL opponent.

“I always want him to succeed, but I want our team to succeed,” Daniel Carlson said. “I would love a blocked kick or something instead of a missed kick.”

The only time the brothers played on the same team came in 2017 at Auburn. Daniel Carlson completed his fourth season with the Tigers as the SEC’s career points leader while Anders Carlson took a redshirt season.

Daniel Carlson entered the NFL as a fifth-round selection of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2018 draft.

In his second game, Daniel Carlson missed three field-goal attempts, including two in overtime, in a 29-29 tie with Green Bay. The Vikings released him the next day.

Daniel Carlson joined the Raiders halfway through the 2018 season. In 2020 and 2021, he tied for the NFL scoring leader, and in 2022, he earned first-team All-Pro recognition as he set an NFL single-season record for the most field goals of 50-or-more yards with 11.

Rich Bisaccia was the special-teams coordinator when Daniel Carlson joined the Raiders. He took that position with the Packers in 2022, so he played a part in Green Bay picking Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

“They’re similar size-wise, that’s the one thing,” Bisaccia said when asked to compare the kickers. “I think personality-wise, when Daniel first came to us, I think he had kind of gone through the shock of getting cut and some of those things. I think he had to refocus on his confidence, rebuild his confidence to the point of where he is now.

“Anders at this point is a little stronger – six years in college – and has more confidence earlier, I guess, for comparing the two. But they’re very similar in the ability to have a big leg and a big kick. …

“I think the thing that’s been good for Anders is that some of the difficulties that Daniel has had, Anders has had the opportunity to learn from, so I think that’s the one thing probably that he’s taken from his brother. I still think the guiding force for those two is the dad. Dad’s an ultracompetitive tennis guy, and I think he’s been a force for both those guys.”

Through his first four games in the NFL, Anders Carlson has made five field goals and nine extra points without a miss. Daniel Carlson also has not missed with four field goals and six extra points.

The Packers and Raiders will meet at 7:15 p.m. CDT Monday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. ABC and ESPN will televise the game.

“It’s really special,” Daniel Carlson said. “Fun that it’s a Monday night game. There’s a football side of it and then there’s like the personal side of it as well. It’s going to be really special. I’ve talked about all week that it’s going to be a balance: Hey, I got a game to get ready for, but I want to be conscious of taking some moments out and appreciating we’ve both worked really hard. This has been our dream for a while and to see it come to fruition and play against each other is really special.”
