NFL’s ‘best cornerback’ expecting challenge from Bills

AJ Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles might be the No. 1 wide receiver in the NFL right now. He had an NFL-record streak of six 125-yard games on his way to 1,005 receiving yards in his nine games this season.

Who does Brown think is the No. 1 cornerback in the NFL?

“I think the best cornerback in the game right now is Pat Surtain (II),” Brown said during an appearance last week on “Speak” on Fox Sports 1. “I like his game so much.”

A first-team All-Pro in 2022, his second NFL season, Surtain appreciates the compliment, but the former Alabama All-American isn’t ready to put on his Hall of Fame jacket yet.

“It means a lot coming from a player like him, a high-caliber player,” Surtain said. “But I don’t try to look too much into it because I tell myself this every time: I still got a lot to prove in my game. But when you get praise like that from players that play the game, it means a lot for sure.”

Surtain and the Denver defense have been preparing for the second game in their back-to-back pairing against two of the NFL’s best and strongest-armed quarterbacks.

The Broncos face the Buffalo Bills at 7:15 p.m. CST Monday at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. ABC and ESPN will televise the game.

Denver defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 24-9 on Oct. 29 its previous outing. A defense that was gouged for 70 points and 726 yards by the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 24 kept quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense out of the end zone, ending the Broncos’ 16-game losing streak to the Chiefs in the process.

“I know (safety) Justin (Simmons), (offensive tackle) Garett Bolles, those guys who’s been here for a while, they haven’t gotten over that hump of beating the Chiefs,” Surtain said. “That was a pretty surreal moment for them.

“But the crazy thing about it is even how excited we was, (coach) Sean (Payton), he mentioned that we shouldn’t be surprised by it. This should be the standard, winning big-time games, especially divisional games like that. It’s good to secure a win finally over the Chiefs, but knowing what this organization could build on and knowing the type of talent and the type of team we have, it’s expected to win those type of games.”

The Broncos’ second consecutive victory got Denver to 3-5 for the Monday night matchup with 5-4 Buffalo.

Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs entered Week 10 as the NFL leader with 70 receptions. While covering Diggs will be a challenge, Surtain also expects to be challenged by Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen, who might not be as shy about throwing the football Surtain’s way as some quarterbacks are.

“He’s willing to allow his receivers to go up and make plays down the field, sometimes in double coverage,” Surtain said. “He’s just willing to make those big-time plays. I think it goes to show the trust he has in his arm ability. And sometimes it doesn’t go well for him, but sometimes it does. He’s a risk-taker. …

“It gives you more opportunities to make plays. That’s what I like — when the ball comes your way often. And I know this week, it’s going to happen often, so it’s a very exciting week.”

The Broncos entered Monday night’s game after an open date last week.

“I’d say the bye week helps a lot,” Surtain said. “It helps us sit back some. It helps us get time to ourselves that we don’t get throughout the season. It gives us time to really rest our bodies and sort of be able to take some time for yourself and enjoy yourself. That’s the biggest thing with bye week. …

“I think everybody feels rejuvenated. Obviously, it’s a long season. But to have that bye week in the middle of the season helps a lot because of the stretch we have ahead going further along in the season. I think having a bye week in this particular time helps a lot.”
