NFL Week 8: Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs run for history

NFL Week 8: Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs run for history

Former Alabama running backs Derrick Henry and Josh Jacobs are streaking into Week 8 of the NFL’s 2022 season.

When the Tennessee Titans visit the Houston Texans on Sunday, Henry could become the first player in NFL history to score at least two rushing touchdowns in four consecutive games against the same opponent and the first player in league history to record at least 150 rushing yards in four consecutive games against the same opponent.

When the Las Vegas Raiders visit the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Jacobs will have the opportunity to become the fifth player in NFL history with at least 150 scrimmage yards and a rushing touchdown in four consecutive games, a feat that hasn’t been achieved in 16 years.

Henry has been a headache for the Titans’ AFC South rivals in general. In 35 games against the Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars, Henry has averaged 99.0 rushing yards per game – a figure dragged down by his rookie season, when he ran for 85 yards on 24 carries against division opponents as DeMarco Murray’s backup.

During the Super Bowl Era, only one player with 30 in-division games has punished his division rivals on the ground as Henry has. Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders averaged 104.7 rushing yards in 76 games against the old NFC Central.

Henry has run for at least 100 yards in nine of his past 10 games against AFC South opponents, and in the game he didn’t, he broke his foot. That injury caused Henry to miss both of Tennessee’s games against the Texans in 2021, and Houston counted one of those contests among its four victories last season.

In his three games against the Texans before the injury, Henry ran for 211 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries in a 35-14 victory on Dec. 29, 2019, 212 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries in a 42-36 victory on Oct 18, 2020, and 250 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries in a 41-38 victory on Jan. 3, 2021.

In the Raiders’ first three games this season, Jacobs had 192 yards and no touchdowns on 42 rushing attempts and 59 yards on seven receptions. In the past three games, Jacobs had 441 yards and six touchdowns on 69 rushing attempts and 82 yards on 13 receptions.

Jacobs has posted the three highest single-game rushing totals of his NFL career this month. Jacobs had 144 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries and 31 yards on five receptions in a 32-23 victory over the Denver Broncos on Oct. 2, 154 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries and 39 yards on five receptions in a 30-29 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 10 and 143 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries and 12 yards on three receptions in a 38-20 victory over the Texans on Oct. 23.

The four players who have had at least 150 scrimmage yards and one rushing TD in four consecutive NFL games are Terrell Davis for the Broncos in 1998, Priest Holmes for the Chiefs in 2002, Larry Johnson for the Chiefs in 2005 and LaDainian Tomlinson for the San Diego Chargers in 2006. Like Jacobs, all four played for an AFC West team.
