NFL Thursday night: First game goes down to last play

The first game of the NFL season went down to the last play. Video review reversed a touchdown pass from Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to tight end Isaiah Likely on the final snap of the contest, preserving a 27-20 victory for the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

Kansas City hosted the opening game of the NFL’s 2024 season after defeating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11. The Chiefs got to the NFL title game for the 2023 season by beating Baltimore 17-10 in the AFC Championship Game.

Kansas City got another seven-point victory over the Ravens by surviving three passes into the end zone by Jackson from the Chiefs 10-yard line in the closing 18 seconds, with the final throw switched to incomplete when Likely was ruled to have landed – by his toes – out of bounds.

The offseason addition who had the biggest impact on the game wasn’t running back Derrick Henry, although the former Alabama All-American did score the first touchdown of the season to cap the Ravens’ opening possession. Henry joined Baltimore as a free agent in March after eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

Instead, Kansas City wide receiver Xavier Worthy, the 28th pick in the NFL Draft on April 25, scored two touchdowns – a 21-yard run on his first NFL touch as the Chiefs tied the game at 7-7 with 5:55 left in the first quarter and a 35-yard reception as Kansas City took a 27-17 lead with 10:25 to play.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 20-of-28 passes for 291 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also had a reception, grabbing a blocked pass from two defenders with 2:30 to play.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson completed 26-of-41 passes for 273 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran 16 times for 122 yards.

Jackson’s TD pass was a 49-yarder 13 seconds into the fourth quarter to Lively, who had nine receptions for 111 yards.

Five players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Baltimore-Kansas City game:

· Jalyn Armour-Davis (St. Paul’s Episcopal, Alabama) started at cornerback for the Ravens. Armour-Davis made one tackle.

· Ravens wide receiver Malik Cunningham (Park Crossing) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Ravens guard Darrian Dalcourt (Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Derrick Henry (Alabama) started at running back for the Ravens. Henry gained 46 yards on 13 rushing attempts and opened the scoring with a 5-yard run with 8:14 left in the first quarter.

· Marlon Humphrey (Hoover, Alabama) started at cornerback for the Ravens. Humphrey made two tackles.

· Ravens safety Eddie Jackson (Alabama) made two tackles in his debut with Baltimore. Jackson joined the Ravens as a free agent during the offseason after seven seasons with the Chicago Bears.
