NFL suspends Jameson Williams for gambling violation
Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was among five players suspended on Friday by the NFL for violating the league’s gambling policy.
The NFL suspended the former Alabama standout and teammate Stanley Berryhill for the first six games of the 2023 season. They remain eligible to participate in the team’s offseason program, training camp and preseason games.
Detroit’s Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore and the Washington Commanders’ Shaka Toney have been suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games during the 2022 season.
The NFL did not provide a specific reason for the suspensions of Williams and Berryhill beyond the violation of the gambling policy.
The NFL’s gambling policy prohibits anyone in the league from engaging in any form of gambling in any club or NFL facility or venue, including the practice facility, and requires that all league personnel cooperate fully with any investigation into possible violations.
The three players who have been suspended indefinitely can petition the league for reinstatement after the 2023 season.
The NFL said in a press release that its investigation indicated that no games were compromised by the gambling activities.
The Lions announced on Friday that Cephus and Moore had been released.
“As a result of an NFL investigation, it came to our attention that a few of our players had violated the league’s gambling policy,” Detroit general manager Brad Holmes said. “These players exhibited decision-making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules. We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately.
“We are disappointed by the decision-making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward.”
Williams joined the Lions as 12th selection in the 2022 NFL Draft after he caught 79 passes for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns and averaged 35.2 yards and scored two touchdowns on 10 kickoff returns during his only season for Alabama in 2021. The Associated Press and The Sporting News selected Williams as a first-team All-American.
Williams played only 78 offensive snaps during his rookie season because he sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his final college game – the CFP championship contest for the 2021 season.
The didn’t dissuade the Lions trading the 32nd, 34th and 66th selections in the 2022 NFL Draft to the Minnesota Vikings to move into position to pick Williams.
Williams wasn’t able to practice with his new teammates until Nov. 21. The Lions activated him on Dec. 3, and he made his NFL debut the next day, 47 weeks after his knee injury.
Williams had two touches during his rookie season. On Dec. 11, Williams started the Lions’ scoring in a 34-23 victory over the Minnesota Vikings with a 41-yard reception. On Jan. 1, Williams went 40 yards on an end-around in Detroit’s 41-10 victory over the Chicago Bears.
