NFL season ends early for former Alabama All-American

The New York Giants gave up on offensive tackle Evan Neal playing again this season and placed the former Alabama All-American on injured reserve on Sunday.

Neal had missed seven of the Giants’ past eight games, including all of the past five because of ankle injuries.

Neal lined up at right tackle for almost every New York offensive snap in the first six games of the season. But since then, he’s played in only one contest – on Nov. 5 in a 30-6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Neal joined the Giants from Alabama as the seventh selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. He started 13 regular-season games and two playoff contests at right tackle as a rookie. He missed four games in the middle of the season because of a shoulder injury.

With a 5-9 record, New York has three games remaining in its season, starting with a visit to face the Philadelphia Eagles at 3:30 p.m. CST Monday.

While placing Neal on injured reserve, the Giants activated offensive tackle Matt Peart off IR on Sunday.
