NFL Scouting Combine: How did the state’s players perform on Saturday?

Oregon wide receiver Tez Johnson had the fastest three-cone drill among the wide receivers at the NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday.

Johnson’s 6.65-second showing also was the fourth-fastest for a player from an Alabama high school or college at the NFL Scouting Combine in this century.

An All-State wide receiver for Pinson Valley’s Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A football championship team in 2018 and an All-State pick again in 2019, Johnson played at Troy in 2020, 2021 and 2022 before transferring to Oregon.

On the Alabama-roots list of three-cone performances at the combine since 2000, Johnson’s showing on Saturday is behind the 6.48 seconds of Auburn cornerback Carlos Rogers in 2005, 6.60 seconds of Troy safety Sherrod Martin in 2009 and 6.62 seconds of American Christian Academy cornerback Kamari Lassiter in 2024.

Johnson edged out the 6.66 seconds of wide receiver Julio Jones. The former Foley High School and Alabama star ran that time at the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine.

Johnson pushed Samford cornerback Corey White out of the Alabama-roots top 10. White had a 6.72-second three-cone drill in 2012.

The three-cone drill is designed to gauge a player’s ability to change directions on the run. With the cones in an L-shape, the player runs 5 yards to the middle cone and back, then runs around the middle cone another 5 yards to the far cone and back around the L to the starting cone.

Ohio State’s Quinshon Judkins had the longest broad jump of the running backs on Saturday as the former Pike Road High School star cleared 11 feet (132 inches).

That landed Judkins in a tie for ninth among players from Alabama high schools and college at the NFL Scouting Combine in this century. The longest broad jump at the combine by a player with Alabama football roots is 135 inches. Jones hit that mark in 2011, and Auburn wide receiver Darius Slayton matched it in 2019.

Judkins is tied with the 132-inch jumps of Auburn wide receiver Ricardo Louis in 2016 and Alabama linebacker Christian Harris in 2022.

Johnson has the fastest three-cone drill through the first three days of this year’s combine, and with only the offensive linemen remaining to take the test, he seems likely to finish with the top time for the 2025 event.

Four players have exceeded Judkins’ broad jump at this year’s combine, with South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori’s 138-inch jump leading the way.

On Saturday, quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs were on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, and eight prospects who played at Alabama high schools and colleges participated (with top-five finishes noted):

  • Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond (Alabama): 4.39-second 40-yard dash
  • Louisville wide receiver Ja’Corey Brooks (Alabama): Brooks did not participate in the measured drills.
  • Oregon wide receiver Traeshon Holden (Alabama): 4.57-second 40-yard dash, 32-inch vertical jump, 123-inch broad jump
  • UCF wide receiver Kobe Hudson (Auburn): 4.57-second 40-yard dash, 35-inch vertical jump, 122-inch broad jump
  • Auburn running back Jarquez Hunter: 4.44-second 40-yard dash, 33.5-inch vertical jump, 120-inch broad jump,
  • Oregon wide receiver Tez Johnson (Pinson Valley High School, Troy): 4.51-second 40-yard dash, 37-inch vertical jump, 131-inch broad jump (fourth among the wide receivers), 6.65-second three-cone drill (first among the wide receivers), 4.15-second shuttle run
  • Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins (Pike Road High School): 4.48-second 40-yard dash, 38.5-inch vertical jump, 132-inch broad jump (first among the running backs)
  • Auburn wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith: 4.37-second 40-yard dash, 34.5-inch vertical jump, 124-inch broad jump
  • Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard (Fairhope High School): Leonard did not participate in the measured drills.
  • Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe: Milroe did not participate in the measured drills.
  • Memphis wide receiver Roc Taylor (Oxford High School): 4.49-second 40-yard dash, 30.5-inch vertical jump, 122-inch broad jump

The players will have the opportunity to participate in the bench press on Sunday. In the bench press, each player does as many repetitions as he can with a 225-pound weight bar.
