NFL Scouting Combine: How did the state’s players perform Friday?

A former Alabama prep star had one of the top showings in the measured drills on Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Testing with the cornerbacks, Tulane defensive back Caleb Ransaw had the best vertical jump and the third-best 40-yard dash and broad jump of his position group at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis.

By running a 4.33-second 40-yard dash, the former Sparkman High School standout turned in one of the 10 fastest times by a player from an Alabama high school or college at the NFL Scouting Combine in this century. He’s now tied with Auburn cornerback Jonathan Jones for the eighth-fastest time for a player with Alabama football roots.

The fastest 40 time by a player from an Alabama high school or college at the combine in this century is 4.27 seconds, achieved by wide receiver Henry Ruggs III from Lee-Montgomery and Alabama in 2020.

Before transferring to Tulane for the 2024 season, Ransaw played three seasons in Troy’s secondary.

The defensive backs and tight ends were on the field on Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine. The players had the opportunity to participate in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone drill and shuttle run and work in position drills under the guidance of NFL coaches and scouts while being scrutinized by league talent evaluators.

A rundown of how each player with Alabama football roots performed (with top-five finishes noted) on Friday in the measured drills includes:

  • Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos (Alabama): 4.43-second 40-yard dash, 32.5-inch vertical jump, 126-inch broad jump
  • Kansas cornerback Cobee Bryant (Hillcrest-Evergreen): 4.53-second 40-yard dash
  • Alabama tight end CJ Dippre: 4.69-second 40-yard dash (third among tight ends), 34.5-inch vertical jump, 120-inch broad jump
  • UCF cornerback Mac McWilliams (UAB): 4.41-second 40-yard dash, 34-inch vertical jump,
  • Alabama safety Malachi Moore (Hewitt-Trussville): Moore did not participate in the measured drills.
  • Alabama tight end Robbie Ouzts: 4.91-second 40-yard dash, 34-inch vertical jump, 119-inch broad jump, 7.34-second three-cone drill, 4.45-second shuttle run
  • Tulane safety Caleb Ransaw (Sparkman, Troy): 4.33-second 40-yard dash (third among cornerbacks), 40-inch vertical jump (first among cornerbacks), 129-inch vertical jump (tied for third among cornerbacks)

Ouzts tackled every measured drill on Friday, an increasingly infrequent occurrence at the combine. His 34-inch vertical jump tied for eighth among the tight ends on Friday. But it was best of any tight end weighing more than 270 pounds in what is considered the modern era (2003 and later) of the combine. Ouzts weighed in at the combine at 274 pounds.

The defensive backs and tight ends will have the opportunity to participate in the bench press on Saturday. In the bench press, players do as many reps with a 225-pound bar as they can.

The quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs will take their turns on the field on Saturday. NFL Network will televise the workouts from noon to 8 p.m. CST Saturday.
