NFL postseason field set for Super Bowl LVIII tourney

Three teams had win-and-in games on the final Sunday of the NFL’s 2023 regular season. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Chicago Bears 17-9 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Carolina Panthers 9-0 to punch their tickets to the NFC postseason. But the Jacksonville Jaguars lost to the Tennessee Titans 28-20.

The Jaguars’ loss had an extended effect on the AFC playoff field. It assured the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills of postseason berths and moved the Houston Texans from a wild-card qualifier with a first-round road game to the AFC South seed-holder with a home game next week.

If Jacksonville had won to take the AFC South crown, Buffalo would have entered the last game of the regular season on Sunday night against the Miami Dolphins without a safety net. But with the Jaguars’ loss, the Bills-Dolphins game turned into a contest only for the AFC East seed and a first-round home game, not for Buffalo’s postseason life.

It turned out the Bills didn’t need the help. Buffalo defeated Miami 21-14.

The 14 teams in the field that will decide the Super Bowl LVIII champion have 58 players from Alabama high schools and colleges on their active rosters. There also are 19 players with Alabama football roots on the postseason teams’ practice squads. Each team is allowed to elevate two practice-squad players to active status for each game. There are 12 state players on injured reserve on the rosters of the 14 teams.
