NFL Playoffs Week 3: Notre Dame set to get Super Bowl win
Twelve colleges have alumni on the active rosters of the teams in the AFC Championship Game, and 14 colleges have alumni on the active rosters of the teams in the NFC Championship Game.
But only one college program has former players on the active rosters of all four teams – Notre Dame. That means the Fighting Irish are the only college program assured of having a winning player in Super Bowl LVIII entering Sunday’s conference championship games.
Notre Dame doesn’t have the most former players on the active rosters of the four remaining teams, though. Florida, Georgia and Michigan have seven apiece.
Alabama had the most former players appear during the 2023 regular season with 72 and opened the postseason with the most former players on the active rosters of the 14 playoff teams with 28. But the Crimson Tide is down to representation by four players – and three are on the Detroit Lions.
Fourteen of the past 15 Super Bowls have featured at least one former Alabama player on the field. The exception was Super Bowl LV, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 on Feb. 7, 2021. Former Tide tight end O.J. Howard was on injured reserve and couldn’t play for the Bucs.
Auburn lost its five remaining players when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers lost during the Divisional Weekend.
Former Auburn offensive tackle Prince Tega Wanogho returned to practice with Kansas City this week for the first time since sustaining a quadriceps injury on Sept. 24. But the Chiefs did not activate him off injured reserve for the AFC Championship Games against the Baltimore Ravens.
North Alabama, Samford and South Alabama still have one former player apiece alive.
The SEC has a total of 45 former players on the active rosters of the four teams – 21 percent of the players.
The postseason active rosters also include eight former Alabama high school standouts.
