NFL Playoffs Week 1: An Alabama-less Super Bowl?

NFL Playoffs Week 1: An Alabama-less Super Bowl?

With 72, Alabama had more of its former players on the field during the NFL’s 2023 regular season than any other college program. The Crimson Tide is carrying that honor into the playoffs.

With the NFL postseason starting on Saturday, Alabama has 27 of its former players on the active rosters of the 14 playoff teams. That’s two more than Georgia and seven more than Notre Dame and Ohio State, which are next on the list.

But that doesn’t assure Alabama representation at Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas. On the AFC side of the Super Bowl bracket, Alabama has players on five of the seven teams. On the NFC side, the Tide is on three teams.

Only one college program is assured of having a former player at Super Bowl LVIII, based the current active rosters of the 14 postseason teams. LSU has a former player on all seven of the AFC teams.

The colleges with the most spread across the postseason are Florida, Notre Dame and Ohio State, who have alumni on 11 teams apiece.

Almost two-thirds of Alabama’s players are on three teams. The Philadelphia Eagles have seven former Crimson Tide standouts and the Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins have five apiece.

Fourteen of the past 15 Super Bowls have featured at least one former Alabama player on the field. The exception was Super Bowl LV, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 7, 2021. Former Tide tight end O.J. Howard was on injured reserve and couldn’t play for the Bucs.

Auburn has eight former players on the active rosters of the playoff teams, Samford and South Alabama have two apiece and Jacksonville State, UAB and West Alabama have one each.

Every SEC team has at least four players in the postseason. With 165 players with SEC alma maters, the conference fills 22 percent of the active-roster slots.

The postseason active rosters also include 26 former Alabama high school stars.
