NFL playoffs: Eagles top 49ers for Super Bowl spot

The Philadelphia Eagles overwhelmed the snakebitten San Francisco 49ers 31-7 in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday to secure a spot in Super Bowl LVII.

San Francisco entered Sunday’s contest having won seven games in a row with rookie Brock Purdy at quarterback. The final player picked in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy was in the lineup after injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.

But on the 49ers’ first possession – with San Francisco already trailing 7-0 – Purdy sustained an elbow injury that forced him out of the game.

Journeyman Josh Johnson took over under center for the 49ers. Johnson completed 7-of-13 passes for 74 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions and lost a fumble before he also had to leave the game.

When Johnson sustained a concussion on the first series of the third quarter, San Francisco faced the choice of reinserting their injured starter or using running back Christian McCaffrey in a wildcat formation.

The 49ers chose to go with Purdy again. The rookie threw only two passes – completed for a combined 4 yards – in the remainder of the game.

The Eagles grabbed control of the game in the final two minutes of the first half. Philadelphia running back Miles Sanders ran 13 yards for his second touchdown of the game as the Eagles went ahead 14-7 with 1:36 left in the second quarter. And after Johnson mishandled a snap to put Philadelphia on the 30-yard line, the Eagles needed three plays to reach the end zone on Brad Scott’s 10-yard run with 16 seconds left in the first half.

Ten players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the San Francisco-Philadelphia game:

· Eagles safety Reed Blankenship (West Limestone) made four tackles on defense and two tackles on special teams. Blankenship also forced and recovered a fumble when he tackled wide receiver Deebo Samuel at the 49ers 31-yard line for a 7-yard loss with 4:05 left to play. The play ended up being the final snap of the game for the San Francisco offense.

· James Bradberry (Pleasant Grove, Samford) started at cornerback for the Eagles. Bradberry made three tackles.

· Landon Dickerson (Alabama) started at left guard for the Eagles.

· Eagles offensive lineman Jack Driscoll (Auburn) played but did not record any stats.

· Jalen Hurts (Alabama) started at quarterback for the Eagles. Hurts completed 15-of-25 passes for 121 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions and ran for 39 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries. Hurts scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak as Philadelphia took a 28-7 lead with 43 seconds left in the third quarter.
