NFL playoffs: Commanders doink into the Divisional Round

A 37-yard field-goal attempt by Zane Gonzalez ricocheted off the right upright and over the crossbar to give the Washington Commanders a 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the final play of an NFC first-round playoff game on Sunday night.

It was business as usual for Washington behind rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. In the Commanders’ final four regular-season games:

  • In a 20-19 victory over New Orleans on Dec. 15, Washington stopped a 2-point conversion pass after the Saints scored a touchdown on the final snap of the game.
  • In a 36-33 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 22, the Commanders scored a touchdown with six seconds to play.
  • In a 30-24 victory over Atlanta on Dec. 29, Washington marched for a touchdown in overtime after the Falcons missed a 56-yard field-goal attempt on the final snap of the fourth quarter.
  • In a 23-19 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Jan. 5, the Commanders scored a touchdown with three seconds to play.

Tampa Bay turned back Washington without points in a first-and-goal situation to stay ahead 17-13 in the fourth quarter. But the Commanders came through on their next fourth-down situation after recovering a botched Buccaneers handoff at the Tampa Bay 13-yard line.

Daniels threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin on fourth-and-2 with 9:46 to play as Washington took a 20-17 lead.

After Tampa Bay tied the score with a field goal with 4:41 remaining, Washington kept the football for the remainder of the game, with Daniels completing 3-of-3 passes for 44 yards and running 4 yards on third-and-2 with 40 seconds remaining to allow the Commanders to keep possession until the last-play kick.

For the game, Daniels completed 24-of-35 passes for 268 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and ran for 36 yards on 13 carries.

Nine players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Washington-Tampa Bay game:

  • Jonathan Allen (Alabama) started at defensive tackle for the Commanders. Allen did not record any stats.
  • Buccaneers safety Marcus Banks (Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.
  • Buccaneers outside linebacker Chris Braswell (Alabama) registered one quarterback hit.
  • Buccaneers linebacker K.J. Britt (Oxford, Auburn) made five tackles.
  • Jamel Dean (Auburn) started at cornerback for the Buccaneers. Dean made four tackles and broke up one pass on the goal line. A knee caused Dean to leave the game in the second half.
  • Commanders cornerback Noah Igbinoghene (Hewitt-Trussville, Auburn) made two tackles.
  • Daron Payne (Shades Valley, Alabama) started at defensive tackle for the Commanders. Payne made one tackle. A finger injury forced Payne out of the game.
  • Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves (South Alabama) made one special-teams tackle.
  • Brian Robinson Jr. (Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, Alabama) started at running back for the Commanders. Robinson ran for 16 yards on 10 carries and caught four passes for 22 yards.
  • Commanders offensive tackle Trent Scott (Lee-Huntsville) did not record any stats.
  • Buccaneers running back D.J. Williams (Auburn) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

After a 12-5 regular season, Washington’s win during Wild-Card Weekend sends the Commanders into a Divisional Round matchup against the NFC’s No. 1 seed. Coming off a first-round bye, the Detroit Lions will play Washington at 7 p.m. CST Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit. FOX will televise the game.

Sunday night’s win was the Commanders’ first in the playoffs since a 17-10 victory over the Buccaneers on Jan. 7, 2006.

Tampa Bay hosted the postseason game after a 10-7 regular-season won the NFC South title.
