NFL Monday night: Fort Payne kicker lifts Bengals

Fort Payne’s Evan McPherson made two field goals to put the Cincinnati Bengals in front on Monday night. The second won the game.

McPherson connected from 48 yards with 1:45 to play in overtime to lift Cincinnati to a 34-31 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars in what turned into a matchup of No. 2 quarterbacks.

The Bengals’ Jake Browning made his second NFL start in place of Joe Burrow, who sustained a season-ending wrist injury on Nov. 16. The Jaguars lost Trevor Lawrence to an ankle injury with 5:03 left in the fourth quarter on Monday night.

That left C.J. Beathard to try to rally Jacksonville.

McPherson hit the crossbar on a 57-yard field-goal attempt in the first quarter, but he nailed a 54-yarder to give Cincinnati a 31-28 lead with 2:28 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Four straight completions by Beathard got the Jaguars into position for a 40-yard field goal by Brandon McManus with 26 seconds remaining in regulation.

After Jacksonville punted on its overtime possession, Cincinnati moved 42 yards in 11 plays to set up McPherson’s winning field goal.

Browning completed 32-of-37 passes for 354 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran for 22 yards and one touchdown on two carries. Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase had 11 receptions for 149 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown.

Lawrence completed 22-of-29 passes for 258 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, and Beathard completed 9-of-10 passes for 63 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

In addition to McPherson, eight other players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field in the Cincinnati-Jacksonville game:

· Josh Allen (Abbeville) started at weakside linebacker for the Jaguars. Allen made seven tackles, recorded 1.5 sacks and intercepted a pass. Allen got his second career interception when he foiled a trick play by Cincinnati. Allen picked off a pass by wide receiver Tyler Boyd and returned it 8 yards to the Bengals 9-yard line. That set up a touchdown as Jacksonville took a 28-21 lead with 3:10 left in the third quarter. Allen has 13.5 sacks this season, tied for the third-most in the NFL.

· Jordan Battle (Alabama) started at safety for the Bengals. Battle made seven tackles, recorded the first sack of his career and broke up a pass. Battle’s sack came on the snap before McManus’ game-tying field goal. The rookie dropped Beathard for a 2-yard loss at the Cincinnati 22-yard line on a third-and-2 snap.

· Jaguars running back Tank Bigsby (Auburn) did not record any stats.

· Jaguars defensive tackle Angelo Blackson (Auburn) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Jaguars offensive tackle Chandler Brewer (Florence) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Jaguars defensive end DJ Coleman (Jacksonville State) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Bengals cornerback Allan George (Andalusia) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Bengals wide receiver Shedrick Jackson (Hoover, Auburn) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron (St. Paul’s Episcopal, Alabama) dressed for the game but did not play. McCarron was Cincinnati’s representative for the overtime coin toss.

· Calvin Ridley (Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Jaguars. Ridley had four receptions for 26 yards and ran three times for 7 yards. Ridley lost his biggest catch to an offensive-holding penalty: During Jacksonville’s overtime possession, Ridley had a 43-yard reception at the Cincinnati 2-yard line. After the penalty wiped out that gain, Ridley had a reception that lost 4 yards that preceded the Jaguars’ overtime punt.

· Jaguars offensive tackle Cam Robinson (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Irv Smith Jr. (Alabama) started at tight end for the Bengals.

· Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt (Park Crossing) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Jaguars safety Daniel Thomas (Lee-Montgomery, Auburn) did not record any stats.

· Darious Williams (UAB) started at cornerback for the Jaguars. Williams made seven tackles and recorded one tackle for loss.

· Jaguars center Darryl Williams (Bessemer City) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jonah Williams (Alabama) started at right offensive tackle for the Bengals.

· Jaguars wide receiver Seth Williams (Paul Bryant, Auburn) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

By ending a three-game losing streak, Cincinnati evened its record at 6-6 while keeping Jacksonville from moving into a tie for a best record in the AFC. The Jaguars are 8-4.
