NFL Monday night: Eagles’ DeVonta Smith makes big catch

On a sloppy night when passing yards were hard to come by, the Philadelphia Eagles completed their long pass with the outcome on the line and the Kansas City Chiefs did not. Consequently, the Eagles defeated the Chiefs 21-17 on Monday night in a matchup between last season’s Super Bowl teams.

Trailing by three points, Philadelphia moved 80 yards on seven plays for the go-ahead touchdown with 6:20 left in the game. The Eagles got all but 1 of the yards on four completions by quarterback Jalen Hurts, including a 41-yard throw to wide receiver DeVonta Smith to the Kansas City 1-yard line.

That set up Hurts’ second touchdown of the second half as he went over the goal line on the Brotherly Shove. Hurts had capped a seven-play, 61-yard series with a 10-yard TD run with 4:05 left in the third quarter as Philadelphia cashed in its two second-half possessions that penetrated Kansas City territory.

The Chiefs had two possessions trailing by four points. On Kansas City’s second chance, quarterback Patrick Mahomes laid a second-and-10 throw from the Chiefs 49-yard line on the hands of Marquez Valdes-Scantling as the wide receiver ran across the Eagles 5-yard line, and he didn’t catch it with 1:42 to play.

Hurts completed 14-of-22 passes for 150 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. The former Alabama QB had his fewest passing yards in a regular-season game since Nov. 28, 2021, when he had 129 in a 13-7 loss to the New York Giants.

Mahomes completed 24-of-43 passes for 177 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Mahomes had his fewest passing yards in a regular-season game since Nov. 7, 2021, when he had 166 in a 13-7 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

Mahomes’ two TD passes came in the first half as the Chiefs took a 10-point lead. But Kansas City didn’t score in the second half. The Chiefs got into Philadelphia territory twice after halftime and lost a fumble at the Eagles 10 and punted from the Eagles 39.

Already a 1,000-yard receiver in 2023, Philadelphia’s A.J. Brown had one reception for 8 yards on Monday night. A former Alabama All-American, Smith picked up the slack with six receptions for 99 yards to take up the slack.

In addition to Hurts and Smith, 11 more players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Philadelphia-Kansas City game:
