NFL Monday night: Cowboys scramble past Chargers

A field goal with 2:19 to play and an interception with 1:22 remaining secured the Dallas Cowboys’ 20-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night.

After former South Alabama standout Gerald Everett caught a 1-yard touchdown toss from Justin Herbert on fourth down with 7:11 to play, the Cowboys moved 54 yards in 14 plays for a 39-yard field goal by former Birmingham Stallions kicker Brandon Aubrey to break a 17-17 tie.

Dallas cornerback Stephon Gilmore intercepted Herbert at the Los Angeles 33, allowing the Cowboys to kneel out the victory.

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott completed 21-of-30 passes for 272 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb catching seven passes for 117 yards. Herbert completed 22-of-37 passes for 227 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Seven players from Alabama high schools and colleges played in the Dallas-Los Angeles game:

· Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Cowboys linebacker Rashaan Evans (Auburn High, Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Gerald Everett (UAB/South Alabama) started at tight end for the Chargers. Everett had three receptions for 16 yards and one touchdown. The touchdown reception was Everett’s first of the season.

· Chargers safety A.J. Finley (St. Paul’s Episcopal) made one tackle on special teams.

· Chargers long snapper Josh Harris (Auburn) handled the snaps for five punts, two extra points and one field goal and was in the middle of a scramble for a muffed punt that Los Angeles recovered.

· Cowboys cornerback Noah Igbinoghene (Hewitt-Trussville, Auburn) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Chargers punter JK Scott (Alabama) averaged 40.6 yards on five punts with a 37.6-yard net. Scott had a 45-yard punt for a fair catch at the Dallas 22-yard line, a 30-yarder downed at the Dallas 12, a 38-yarder for a fair catch at the Dallas 22, a 40-yarder returned for 15 yards to the Dallas 29 and a 49-yarder muffed and recovered by Los Angeles at the Dallas 20.

· Cowboys wide receiver Jalen Tolbert (McGill-Toolen, South Alabama) did not catch any passes, but he was charged with losing a fumble on a key play in the game. Dallas wide receiver KaVontae Turpin tried to fair-catch a punt, but when a blocker was knocked into him and he couldn’t field it, a scramble for the bouncing football ensued. Tolbert got to the ball, but Los Angeles long snapper Josh Harris did, too, prolonging the chase, which the Chargers won at the Dallas 20-yard line. But possession was awarded to the Cowboys because Turpin had never touched the football. However, video review showed Tolbert touched it before any Los Angeles player did, and Los Angeles got the football with 8:41 to play. The Chargers tied the score with a touchdown five snaps later.

· Chargers defensive tackle Nick Williams (Minor, Samford) made three tackles, recorded one sack and registered two tackles for loss. The sack was the first of the season for Williams.

· Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams (Lee-Montgomery) did not record any stats.

Dallas (4-2) enters its bye week and won’t return to the field on Oct. 29 against the visiting Los Angeles Rams. The Chargers (2-3) visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
