NFL Monday night: Bears have Fields day against Pats

The New England Patriots’ quarterback situation hogged the attention during the NFL’s Monday night game for Week 7 of the 2022 season.

Mac Jones returned to the starting lineup after missing the previous three games with an ankle injury. But after three possessions – two three-and-outs and an interception – the Patriots replaced the 2021 Pro Bowler and All-Rookie QB with Bailey Zappe, the rookie who had been under center as New England won its previous two games.

While the Patriots had drama at quarterback, Chicago Bears got production from their QB in a 33-14 victory on a foggy night at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Justin Fields completed 13-of-21 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown and one interception and ran for 82 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries as the Bears posted their first victory over New England since a 24-17 victory on Dec. 10, 2000.

Trailing 14-10 in the second quarter, Chicago scored on its next five possessions to post the final 23 points of the game. Fields’ 25-yard pass to Khalil Herbert and David Montgomery’s 1-yard run bookended three field goals by Cairo Santos with touchdowns.

The Bears ran for 243 yards, the fourth-most against the Patriots during the 23-season tenure of coach Bill Belichick.

Twelve players from Alabama high schools and colleges played in the Chicago-New England game:

· Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive. A knee injury caused Barmore to miss a game for the first time since joining New England as a second-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.

· Bears defensive lineman Angelo Blackson (Auburn) made one tackle.

· Khari Blasingame (Buckhorn) started at fullback for the Bears.

· Bears running back Damien Harris (Alabama) ran for 8 yards on three carries and caught a 2-yard pass. Harris missed last week’s game with a hamstring injury.

· Eddie Jackson (Alabama) started at safety for the Bears. Jackson made four tackles.

· Anfernee Jennings (Dadeville, Alabama) started at outside linebacker for the Patriots. Jennings made six tackles, recorded one sack, broke up a pass and forced a fumble (which Chicago recovered). Jennings reached a career high for tackles, surpassing the five made against the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 25, 2020, and collected his first full sack in his 20th NFL game.

· Jonathan Jones (Auburn) started at left cornerback for the Patriots. Jones made three tackles.

· Mac Jones (Alabama) started at quarterback for the Patriots. Jones completed 3-of-6 passes for 13 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and ran three times for 24 yards.

· Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones (Enterprise, Troy) returned five kickoffs for 113 yards and two punts for 12 yards.

· Bears wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. (Saraland) played but did not record any stats.

· Bears offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood (Alabama) is on reserve/non-football injury and not eligible to play.

· Darnell Mooney (Gadsden City) started at wide receiver for the Bears. Mooney had three passes for 53 yards.

· Nicholas Morrow (Huntsville) started at linebacker for the Bears. Morrow made five tackles.

· Patriots defensive lineman LaBryan Ray (James Clemens, Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Patriots outside linebacker Mack Wilson (Carver-Montgomery, Alabama) made one tackle, shared a sack and forced a fumble (which the Bears recovered).

Monday night’s result left each team with a 3-4 record.

On Sunday, Chicago visits the Dallas Cowboys and New England visits the New York Jets.
