NFL Monday night: Amari Cooper busy for Browns

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper got the full range of experience in the passing game in a 32-13 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night.

In his eighth NFL season, the former Alabama All-American threw the first pass of his career. On a first-and-10 snap at the Cleveland 44-yard line, Cooper took the ball on an end-around and tried to throw to wide receiver Michael Woods II. But Cincinnati safety Vonn Bell picked off the pass at the Cincinnati 38-yard line with 1:30 left in the first quarter.

But Cooper also caught five passes for 131 yards and one touchdown. Cooper reached a season high in his third 100-yard receiving game of 2022, which also was the 28th of his career. Cooper had three receptions for 100 yards on third-down snaps to keep two touchdown drives going.

Cooper’s fifth touchdown reception of the season came on a 4-yard pass from quarterback Jacoby Brissett as the Browns took a 25-0 lead with 3:10 left in the third quarter.

Browns running back Nick Chubb had 101 yards and two touchdowns on 23 rushing attempts. Cleveland quarterback Jacoby Brissett completed 17-of-22 passes for 278 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow completed 25-of-35 passes for 232 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, but the Bengals’ leading receiver by yardage was wide receiver Tee Higgins, who had 49 yards on three receptions. Higgins caught a 41-yard pass with 6:40 to play for the game’s final touchdown.

Cincinnati played without Ja’Marr Chase, who had 15 receptions for 262 yards and four receptions in the past two games, when the Bengals beat the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons. A hip injury sidelined Chase.

In addition to Cooper, eight players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Cincinnati-Cleveland game:

· Browns running back Jerome Ford (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Browns tight end Miller Forristall (Alabama) played but did not record any stats. Cleveland elevated Forristall from its practice squad to make him eligible for Monday’s game.

· Bengals cornerback Allan George (Andalusia) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Browns safety Ronnie Harrison (Alabama) played but did not record any stats.

· Browns offensive tackle Chris Hubbard (UAB) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Bengals kicker Evan McPherson (Fort Payne) missed wide right on a 47-yard field-goal attempt and went 1-of-2 on extra-point kicks.

· Browns wide receiver Chester Rogers (Lee-Huntsville) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Browns wide receiver Anthony Schwartz (Auburn) played but did not record any stats.

· Cam Taylor-Britt (Park Crossing) started at cornerback for the Bengals. Taylor-Britt recorded five tackles. The 2022 second-round draft choice made his first start in his second NFL game.

· Jonah Williams (Alabama) started at left offensive tackle for the Bengals.

· Jedrick Wills Jr. (Alabama) started at left offensive tackle for the Browns.

· Alex Wright (Elba, UAB) started at defensive end for the Browns. He did not record any stats.

Cleveland improved to 3-5 while Cincinnati fell to 4-4.

The Browns entered their bye week and will return to the field on Nov. 13, when Cleveland visits the Miami Dolphins.

The Bengals will host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
