NFL Friday night: Mac Jones, Carter Bradley toss touchdown passes
Quarterbacks Mac Jones and Carter Bradley threw touchdown passes in NFL preseason games on Friday night. The touchdown pass for the Jacksonville Jaguars was nothing new for Jones, as a three-year NFL starter. But for Bradley, the TD pass for the Las Vegas Raiders was the first as a pro for the undrafted rookie.
A former Alabama All-American, Jones followed Jaguars starter Trevor Lawrence into Jacksonville’s preseason finale and produced two touchdowns and field goal during his five series on the field in a 31-0 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
Raiders coach Antonio Pierce said on Wednesday that Bradley would start Friday night’s game. Instead, Nathan Peterman played the first half, with the former South Alabama QB handling the second for the Raiders in a 24-24 tie with the San Francisco 49ers.
A third quarterback from a state school could have played on Friday night, but the Miami Dolphins kept former Alabama All-American Tua Tagovailoa on the sideline during their 24-14 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game featured the first sack in a Tampa Bay uniform for rookie Chris Braswell, a second-round draft choice from Alabama.
Jones completed 13-of-18 passes for 113 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and had an 8-yard run. Jones tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Elijah Cooks as the Jaguars took a 21-0 lead with 18 seconds left in the first half.
Traded to Jacksonville after three seasons as the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback, Jones completed 38-of-52 passes for 421 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Jaguars’ three preseason games as he prepared for backup duty in 2024.
Bradley threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tyreik McAlliser as Las Vegas took a 21-17 lead with 11:30 left in the third quarter.
Bradley had the opportunity to put the Raiders in front again after Las Vegas reached the San Francisco 3-yard line. But his former South Alabama teammate, 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter Jr., came up with the first interception of his pro career on a fourth-down throw into the end zone with 11:18 remaining to keep San Francisco ahead 24-21.
Bradley completed 9-of-21 passes for 169 yards with one touchdown and one interception and had one rushing attempt for 1 yard.
On the Raiders’ final possession, Bradley had four completions in a five-pass span to move Las Vegas 69 yards, and former Auburn standout Daniel Carlson kicked a 43-yard field goal with 16 seconds left to tie the game. (NFL preseason games do not use overtime.)
Luter also tied for the team lead with five tackles and broke up two other passes.
Carlson also kicked three extra points for the Raiders.
