NFL fines 5 Alabama alumni, but not Mac Jones

The NFL fined five former Alabama players for on-the-field transgressions during Week 3 of the 2023 season, including Brian Branch twice and Kareem Jackson for the third game in a row, but Mac Jones was not among them.

Jones came under scrutiny after New England’s 15-10 victory over New York on Sunday when Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner said the Patriots quarterback had “hit me in my private parts.”

While that led to lots of video clips being posted on social media of the aftermath of an unsuccessful quarterback sneak by Jones, it did not lead to monetary punishment from the league. Gardner, who shoved Jones to the turf on the incident in question, wasn’t fined either.

But seven players from Alabama high schools and colleges were fined for Week 3 actions. The players on the fine list released by the NFL on Saturday included:

· Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Kwon Alexander (Oxford) was fined $43,709 for unnecessary roughness. Alexander also was fined that amount last week for unnecessary roughness. The play cited by the NFL for Alexander’s fine in the Steelers’ 23-18 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders did not involve a penalty.

· Detroit Lions defensive back Brian Branch (Alabama) was fined $8,103 twice. Branch was fined after being penalized for a horse-collar tackle and unnecessary roughness in the Lions’ 20-6 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

· Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson (Alabama) was fined $11,473 for unnecessary roughness. Jackson was not penalized for the tackle in the Broncos’ 70-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins that drew the fine. Jackson has been fined every week this season. The NFL fined Jackson $14,819 for an unnecessary-roughness penalty in a 16-14 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 10 and $19,669 for another in a 35-33 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sept. 17. Jackson also was ejected for the latter hit.

· New York Giants defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson (Alabama) was fined $11,473 for an unnecessary-roughness penalty on a kneel-down to end the first half in the Giants’ 30-12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Robinson and 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams drew offsetting penalties on the play, and Williams got the same fine as Robinson.

· Denver Broncos outside linebacker Drew Sanders (Alabama) was fined $5,793 for an unnecessary-roughness penalty in a 70-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

· Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II (Alabama) was fined $11,473 for unnecessary roughness. He was not penalized on the play during the Dolphins’ 70-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

· Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt (Park Crossing) was fined $7,516 for unnecessary roughness. Taylor-Britt was not penalized on the play cited by the NFL for the fine during the Bengals’ 19-16 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.
