NFL Draft profile: Breaking down Auburn edge Derick Hall’s ‘rugged style’

Derick Hall was one of Auburn’s most consistent players the last two seasons, and now he’s expected to be the first Tiger off the board in next week’s NFL Draft.

Hall is widely projected as a potential Day 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, as the two-time All-SEC selection looks to carry over his production and success as a pass-rusher over from the college game to the pros. Ahead of next week’s NFL Draft, former Auburn offensive lineman and current ESPN/SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic sat down with AL.com to provide insight on each of the Tigers’ top draft prospects. In the video included at the top of this story, Cubelic breaks down Hall’s game and what he brings to the table as an NFL edge defender.

While Cubelic noted some concerns as it relates to Hall’s measurables, there’s little doubt about whether Hall has the work ethic and intangibles — as well as a “rugged style” off the edge and an underrated ability to defend the run — to help make up for some of those perceived deficiencies.

Hall was, after all, a highly productive player off the edge during his career at Auburn, even during what was a difficult period for the program, starting with the pandemic-impacted 2020 campaign, a coaching change that offseason and another in-season change during Hall’s senior season.

During his four years at Auburn, Hall played for two different head coaches, two other interim coaches, three defensive coordinators and three different positions coaches. He still finished his career as a three-year starter, two-time All-SEC selection and team captain with 147 tackles, 29.5 for a loss and 19.5 sacks. He led Auburn in sacks and tackles for loss each of the last two seasons.
