NFL draft hopeful hit by drunk driver, lawyer says
Mobile native Michael Jefferson, an NFL Draft prospect at wide receiver, was released from the hospital Thursday, according to his attorney.
In a statement on behalf of the family, Brad Sohn said Jefferson was hit by a drunk driver on Easter night. The 2018 graduate of Mobile’s Murphy High School who played collegiately at both Alabama State and Louisiana-Lafayette required multiple surgeries following the multi-car accident, according to his agent.
“Michael would not have made it this far without being a fighter and remains in good spirits under the circumstances,” Sohn wrote. “He still has optimism that – even as he continues to undergo grueling rehabilitation – he can have an outstanding NFL career. We believe that optimism is well-founded and hope a team will still select this terrific young man and great football player.”
Jefferson is expected to miss the 2023 season but is hopeful to return in 2024. The 6-foot-4 standout was expected to be a mid-to-late round pick in next week’s NFL Draft.
Jefferson signed with Alabama State out of Murphy in 2018. In three seasons with the Hornets, he totaled 80 receptions for 1,085 yards and 17 touchdowns before transferring to Louisiana.
Jefferson played two seasons with the Ragin’ Cajuns, totaling 69 receptions for 1,291 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was an honorable mention all-Sun Belt Conference pick in 2022.
“Finally, we’d also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that, in today’s age of Uber and Lyft, there is absolutely no reason to drive impaired,” Sohn wrote.
According to TMZ, Charles Dunn, 55, was suspected of having drugs and alcohol in his system when his car slammed into Jefferson’s on April 9. Dunn died in the accident.
