NFL draft 2023: Stetson Bennett headed to Los Angeles

Stetson Bennett will get an NFL opportunity after all.

The Georgia quarterback was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, going with the No. 128 overall pick in the fourth round. In Los Angeles, Bennett joins fellow Georgia alum Matthew Stafford, the Rams’ starting quarterback.

The 5-foot-11, 192-pound Bennett, a former walk-on, led Georgia to back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. He passed for 4,128 yards and 27 touchdowns this past season, finishing fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Bennett has been controversial off the field, however. He turned down a Senior Bowl invitation in late January, and was arrested for public intoxication while training in Dallas.

Bennett’s NFL.com draft profile reads in part:

Bennett will turn 26 years old during his rookie season and he’s small in stature relative to today’s game. Those two things will work against him, but his history of elevating his play in spotlight games against the best competition should be a factor for some teams. He doesn’t have a plus arm and his accuracy and placement can vary from drive to drive, but he throws with anticipation and has shown an ability to get through progressions as a pro-style passer. He’s rarely sacked and has the mobility to do damage outside of the pocket. Bennett has backup potential for a timing-based passing attack that includes concepts often seen in the Shanahan offense.
