A week after beating the slumping Philadelphia Eagles on Wild Card Weekend, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to what is sure to be a raucous Ford Field to face the Detroit Lions for a place in the NFC Championship Game.

NFL Divisional Playoffs Buccaneers vs. Lions odds preview

There will be fewer more hostile places to go in the NFL this weekend than Ford Field, and not just because of the icy weather.

Michigan is in celebratory mood after the Wolverines’ College Football Playoff National Championship triumph was followed six days later by the Lions’ first NFL playoff win in 32 years. The decibel level in the stadium on Sunday broke the stadium’s record. You know the old adage “as loud as a jet engine?” Well, they really were.

The noise from the crowd carried the team through to a 24-23 win over the LA Rams that banished three decades’ worth of demons and ended the NFL’s longest active playoff victory drought. Jared Goff had 277 passing yards and went 22-for-27 with a touchdown.

Waves of momentum like that have won championships before, and bursting Detroit’s bubble will take some doing.

But the Bucs roll into town on the back of a crushing 32-9 Wild Card win over the Philadelphia Eagles in which they racked up 426 yards of offense. Baker Mayfield threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns and spread the ball around intelligently and efficiently, with five different teammates recording at least 45 receiving yards.

They’ve now won six of their last seven games and will also want revenge after the Bucs slipped to a 20-6 defeat to the Lions on home turf back in October as Goff had a stud’s game, exceeding 350 passing yards and throwing two touchdowns.

If they can avenge that loss in the noise and frigidity of Ford Field, it’ll be arguably their most impressive win of the season.

Kickoff at Ford Field is at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday. The hosting Lions are near-touchdown favorites at -6.5

NFL Divisional Playoffs Buccaneers vs. Lions best bet: Over 48.5 (-110 or better)

Both of these teams have solid defenses, but we’re expecting it to turn pretty quickly into a shootout between Goff and Mayfield, who are both dialled in. If there’s one place where stout rearguards can begin to wobble, it’s the pressure (and bad weather) of the postseason.

The Over is 7-3 in the Lions’ last 10 games and that stat gets even more pronounced at home, where it’s gone over the opening over/under mark in all of their last nine outings. That trend has largely been based on the fact Detroit is averaging 30.5 points per game and 408.8 yards.

Meanwhile, the Bucs have scored at least 29 points in four of their last six contests. The fact that both of these defenses have primarily been stingy against the run means Goff and Mayfield will sling the rock aplenty.

NFL Divisional Playoffs Buccaneers vs. Lions player prop: Baker Mayfield over 254.5 passing yards (-110 at Bet365)

It’s no exaggeration to say that Mayfield might be coming into Sunday on the back of one of the best passing games in Tampa Bay’s history. He completed 22/36 attempts for 307 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions in the beatdown of Philly, becoming the first Buc ever to throw for over 300 yards and three scores in a playoff game.

All told, he’s now thrown for at least 280 yards in four of his last five games, and 300+ in three of those. Sure, he had a down game against the Lions back in October, but he’s found his groove since and is in the kind of form that is hard to stop. Plus, while the Lions aren’t conceding a ton of points, they’re offering up aerial yardage on a platter, allowing opponents to throw more than 344 passing yards in every one of their last four games.

It’s hard not to think Mayfield could breeze past 300 here given his vast arsenal including Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and Co.

NFL Divisional Playoffs Buccaneers vs. Lions player prop: Amon-Ra St. Brown over 89.5 receiving yards (-115 at Caesars)

But the Bucs aren’t the only team with a pinpoint QB arm and a scintillating wide receiver.

First-team All-Pro Amon-Ra St. Brown has been impressively consistent for Detroit, amassing 90+ receiving yards in each of his last five games and 12 of his last 16. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay struggles mightily against top-tier receivers and has allowed 11 different WRs to hit 90+ yards this season, including in October when the Sun God had 124 yards and 12 catches.

Much will depend on how well the Bucs pressure Goff. Detroit’s QB was a perfect 22-of-22 for 277 yards when he was not pressured last week but 0-of-5 with three sacks when he was. But with St. Brown his chief target as the game looking set to be an aerial back-and-forth, Amon-Ra’s worth a look.
