NFL Combine: Which running back ran fastest on Sunday?

Texas A&M’s Devon Achane ran the third-fastest 40-yard dash for a running back at the NFL Scouting Combine in his century when he blazed a 4.32-second showing on Sunday.

Achane’s time on the final day of the field drills at the annual event was the third-fastest at this year’s combine, behind the 4.26 seconds of Michigan cornerback DJ Turner II and the 4.30 seconds of Maryland cornerback Jakorian Bennett, who prepped at McGill-Toolen in Mobile.

The running backs who have been faster than Achane at the combine were East Carolina’s Chris Johnson at 4.24 seconds in 2008 and Georgia’s Keith Marshall at 4.31 seconds in 2016.

Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs ran the second-fastest 40 time among the running backs at 4.36 seconds. Gibbs recorded the fastest 40 time for a Crimson Tide running back at the combine, surpassing the 4.45 seconds of Kenyan Drake in 2016.

East Carolina’s Keaton Mitchell placed third on Sunday with a 4.37-second clocking. Mitchell had the fastest first 10 yards among the running backs at 1.48 seconds.

In addition to Gibbs, two other players from Alabama high schools and colleges ran the 40 with the running backs:

· Appalachian State running back Camerun Peoples (Clay Central) ran a 4.61-second 40.

· Auburn running back Tank Bigsby ran a 4.56-second 40.

· UAB running back DeWayne McBride did not run the 40.

Only one other SEC running back ran the 40 on Sunday, with Georgia’s Kenny McIntosh recording a 4.62-second time.

In the other measured drills on Sunday, the leaders among the running backs included:

Vertical jump: Illinois’ Chase Brown had the top showing at 40 inches – 1 inch better than Tulane’s Tyjae Spears and 2 inches better than East Carolina’s Keaton Mitchell.

Broad jump: Illinois’ Chase Brown led at this station, too, by clearing 127 inches – 10 feet, 7 inches. East Carolina’s Keaton Mitchell finished 1 inch behind with Tulane’s Tyjae Spears 2 inches back.
