NFL Combine: Which defensive back ran fastest Friday?

Michigan cornerback DJ Turner II ran one of the fastest 40-yard dash times in the history of the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday.

Turner clocked a 4.26-second 40-yard dash on his first run at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and decided to pass on his second attempt.

The NFL considers the combine’s modern history as starting in 2003, and during that span only three players have been faster than Turner — Washington wide receiver John Ross at 4.22 seconds in 2017, Baylor cornerback Kalon Barnes at 4.23 in 2022 and East Carolina running back Chris Johnson in 4.24 in 2008.

On Friday, the defensive backs ran in two groups – cornerbacks and safeties. The fastest 40 for a safety belonged to Pittsburgh’s Brandon Hill with a 4.43-second showing.

Maryland cornerback Jakorian Bennett, a former standout at McGill-Toolen Catholic in Mobile, had the second-fastest 40 time among the defensive backs on Friday at 4.30, with college teammate Deonte Banks and Mississippi State’s Emmanuel Forbes next-best at 4.35 seconds.

Bennett was among five players from Alabama high schools and colleges who ran the 40-yard dash at the combine on Friday. The others and their times include:

· Alabama safety Jordan Battle: 4.55 seconds

· Alabama cornerback Brian Branch: 4.58

· Alabama safety DeMarcco Hellams: 4.57

· South Alabama cornerback Darrell Luter Jr.: 4.46

Forbes had the fastest time among the SEC contingent running on Friday. Other SEC defensive backs and their times include:

· Florida safety Trey Dean III: 4.75 seconds

· LSU cornerback Mekhi Garner: 4.55

· Texas A&M safety Antonio Johnson: 4.52

· Texas A&M cornerback Jaylon Jones: 4.57

· Georgia cornerback Kelee Ringo: 4.36

· South Carolina cornerback Darius Rush: 4.36

· South Carolina cornerback Cam Smith: 4.43

· Georgia safety Christopher Smith II: 4.62

· Florida safety Rashad Torrence II: 4.72

· LSU cornerback Jay Ward: 4.55

In the other measured drills on Friday, the leaders among the defensive backs included:

Vertical jump: Illinois safety Jartavius Martin got the highest among the defensive backs with a 44-inch effort. Oklahoma safety Jason Taylor II posted a 43-inch vertical jump. Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks had the No. 3 showing at 42 inches.

Broad jump: Kansas State cornerback Julius Brents cleared 138 inches – 11 feet, 6 inches – to top the defensive backs. Brents’ performance is tied for the ninth-longest in combine history. Brents jumped 2 inches farther than Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks, the runner-up on Friday, and 4 inches farther than No. 3 Cam Smith, a cornerback from South Carolina.

There are 59 defensive backs at the combine this year.
