NFL Combine: Texas wide receiver breaks 40 record

Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy ran the 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday, which is faster than the recognized record for the event.

Before Worthy’s run, the NFL recognized the 4.22-second showing of Washington wide receiver John Ross in 2017 as the fastest 40 recorded at the combine.

Worthy’s combine weight was 165 pounds.

Worthy’s record performance outclassed the rest of the wide receivers in the 40 on Saturday. Runner-up Brian Thomas Jr. of LSU clocked in at 4.33 seconds. Worthy’s Texas teammate Adonai Mitchell had the third-fastest time at 4.34 seconds.

Two prospects who played at Alabama ran with the wide receivers on Saturday. The Crimson Tide’s Jermaine Burton ran a 4.45-second 40, and UCF’s Javon Baker record a 4.54. Baker played at Alabama in 2020 and 2021 before transferring the Central Florida.

Four other SEC wide receivers ran the 40 on Saturday:

· Mississippi State’s Lideatrick Griffin: 4.43 seconds

· South Carolina’s Xavier Legette: 4.39 seconds

· Georgia’s Ladd McConkey: 4.39 seconds

· Florida’s Ricky Pearsall: 4.41 seconds

In the other measured drills on Saturday, the leaders among the wide receivers included:

Vertical jump: Holy Cross’ Jalen Coker and Virginia’s Malik Washington had the best showings at 42.5 inches. Florida’s Pearsall was third at 42 inches.

Broad jump: Texas’ Mitchell cleared 11 feet, 4 inches for the best showing. North Carolina’s Devontez Walker went 11 feet, 2 inch for second place, with Alabama’s Burton third at 11 feet, 1 inch.
