NFL Combine: How did the state players perform Friday?

Only two players from Alabama high schools and colleges have run faster in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine this century than former McGill-Toolen Catholic standout Jakorian Bennett did on Friday.

The Maryland cornerback ran the 40 in 4.30 seconds at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The only player faster at this year’s combine has been Michigan cornerback DJ Turner II, who had a 4.26-second showing on Friday.

The only players with Alabama football roots who have run the 40 faster than Bennett at the combine since 2000 have been wide receiver Henry Ruggs III (Lee-Montgomery, Alabama) at 4.27 seconds in 2020 and wide receiver J.J. Nelson (Midfield, UAB) at 4.28 seconds in 2015.

Cornerback Jamel Dean (Auburn) also clocked a 4.30-second 40 time in 2019.

Defensive backs were on the field on Friday, and the players had the opportunity to participate in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone drill and shuttle run and work in position drills under the guidance of NFL coaches and scouts while being scrutinized by league talent evaluators.

A rundown of how each player with Alabama football roots performed (with top-five finishes noted) on Friday in the measured drills includes:

· Alabama safety Jordan Battle: 4.55-second 40-yard dash. Jordan did not participate in the vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone drill and shuttle run.

· Maryland cornerback Jakorian Bennett (McGill-Toolen): 4.30-second 40-yard dash (second among cornerbacks), 40.5-inch vertical jump (tied for fourth among cornerbacks) and 11-foot, 1-inch broad jump (tied for fourth among cornerbacks). Bennett did not participate in the three-cone drill and shuttle run.

· Alabama cornerback Brian Branch: 4.58-second 40-yard dash, 34.5-inch vertical jump, 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump. Branch did not participate in the three-cone drill and shuttle run.

· Auburn kicker Anders Carlson: Carlson did not participate in the measured drills.

· Alabama safety DeMarcco Hellams: 4.57-second 40-yard dash, 31-inch vertical jump and 10-foot, 1-inch broad jump. Hellams did not participate in the three-cone drill and shuttle run.

· Alabama cornerback Eli Ricks: Ricks did not participate in the measured drills.

The defensive backs will have the opportunity to participate in the bench press on Saturday. In the bench press, players do as many reps with a 225-pound bar as they can.

The quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends will take their turns on the field on Saturday. NFL Network will televise the workouts from noon to 7 p.m. CST Saturday.
