NFL Combine: Former Alabama prep star shines in drills

NFL Combine: Former Alabama prep star shines in drills

Former McGill-Toolen standout Jakorian Bennett recorded the second-fastest time in the 40-yard dash at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine.

The combine concluded in Indianapolis on Monday with the offensive linemen and running backs measuring their strength and endurance in the bench press.

Bennett ran the 40-yard dash in 4.30 seconds on Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The only player who ran faster than the Maryland cornerback at this year’s combine was Michigan cornerback DJ Turner II, who clocked in at 4.26 seconds.

Bennett’s 40 time is tied for the third-fastest by an Alabama high school or college player at the combine in this century.

The only state players who had been faster than Bennett are wide receiver Henry Ruggs III (Lee-Montgomery, Alabama) at 4.27 seconds in 2020 and wide receiver J.J. Nelson (Midfield, UAB) at 4.28 seconds in 2015. Cornerback Jamel Dean (Auburn) also ran a 4.30 40 at the 2019 combine.

Bennett’s combine work also placed him in the top 10 performances among players with Alabama football roots in the broad jump and vertical jump.

Bennett had a broad jump of 133 inches (11 feet, 1 inch), which tied for seventh overall at the combine. Among players from Alabama high schools and colleges, the effort is tied for fourth this century – 2 inches short of the record set by wide receiver Julio Jones (Foley, Alabama) at the 2011 combine and tied by wide receiver Darius Slayton (Auburn) at the 2019 combine.

Another former Mobile prep standout, wide receiver Michael Jefferson also had a 133-inch broad jump at the 2023 combine. Jefferson played at Murphy and Alabama State before transferring to Louisiana.

In the vertical jump, Bennett cleared 40.5 inches, which tied for ninth at the 2023 combine but is tied for seventh-best by a player with Alabama football roots.

South Alabama cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. also had a 40.5-inch vertical jump at the 2023 combine.

The best combine vertical jump by a player from an Alabama high school or college in this century is 42.5 inches by running back Ameer Abdullah (Homewood).

Auburn linebacker Owen Pappoe led his position group at two stations. He had the fastest 40-yard dash at 4.39 seconds and did the most bench-press reps with 29 among the linebackers.

In the bench press, participants try to get as many repetitions as possible with a 225-pound weight bar.
