NFL Combine: Alabama’s Dallas Turner fastest in edge group

Alabama’s Dallas Turner covered the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds to record the fastest time among the players designated as edge rushers in the marquee drill at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.

Thirty-two edge rushers are at the combine, and Turner and Penn State’s Chop Robinson were the only ones who ran on Thursday who came in faster than 4.5 seconds in the 40.

Robinson clocked in at 4.48 seconds.

Colorado State’s Mohamed Kamara had the third-fastest time among the edge rushers at 4.57 seconds.

Three other players from Alabama high schools and colleges at this year’s combine were designated as edge rushers:

· Alabama’s Chris Braswell ran a 4.60-second 40-yard dash, which ranked fifth among the edge rushers.

· Ole Miss’ Cedric Johnson (Davidson) posted a 4.63-second time in the 40. That ranked seventh-overall. Johnson ran at 260 pounds, and the six edge rushers who ran fastest than Johnson weighed less.

· Troy’s Javon Solomon clocked 4.72 seconds in the 40.

Two other SEC edge rushers ran the 40 on Thursday:

· Arkansas’ Trajan Jeffcoat: 4.69 seconds

· Missouri’s Darius Robinson: 4.95

In the other measurable drills on Thursday, the leaders among the edge rushers included:

Vertical jump: Turner got an inch higher than any of the other edge rushers at 40.5 inches. Among Alabama players at the combine in this century, Turner’s vertical jump ranks third behind the 42-inch efforts of defensive end Mark Anderson in 2006 and wide receiver Henry Ruggs III in 2020. UCLA’s Gabriel Murphy placed second at 39.5 inches on Thursday, with Ole Miss’ Johnson at 38 inches.

Broad jump: Penn State’s Robinson and Houston Christian’s Jalyx Hunt tied for the top spot at 10 feet, 8 inches – 128 inches. Three players were 1 inch behind – Alabama’s Turner, Notre Dame’s Javontae Jean-Baptiste and Florida State’s Jared Verse.

Three-cone drill: Western Michigan’s Marshawn Kneeland breezed to the fastest time at 7.02 seconds. Second-place Nelson Ceasar of Houston came in at 7.30 seconds, with Florida State’s Verse at 7.31 seconds. Only five of the edge players participated in the three-cone drill.

The drill is designed to measure a player’s ability to change directions. With the cones in an L-shape, the player runs 5 yards to the middle cone and back, then runs around the middle cone, another 5 yards to the far cone and back around the L to the starting cone.

Shuttle run: Kneeland also had the best time in the shuttle run at 4.18 seconds. He finished ahead of Penn State’s Robinson, second at 4.25 seconds, and Florida State’s Jared Verse, third at 4.44 seconds. Only six of the edge players participated at this station.

The drill is designed to test lateral quickness. It’s sometimes called the 5-10-5. From a middle starting position, the player runs 5 yards to his right, touches a line, turns and runs 10 yards to the left and touches a line, then runs back to the starting spot.
