NFL Christmas: Ravens, Eagles, Raiders post victories
Entering their Monday night meeting, the Baltimore Ravens had the best record in the AFC and the San Francisco 49ers had the best record in the NFC, with both teams at 11-3.
The Ravens came out of the contest with the best record in the NFL by beating the 49ers 33-19 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
Baltimore intercepted San Francisco quarterbacks Brock Purdy four times and Sam Darnold once, and the Ravens’ three touchdown drives covered 53, 44 and 9 yards.
The Ravens-49ers game concluded an NFL Christmas tripleheader that started with the Las Vegas Raiders’ 20-14 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs followed by the Philadelphia Eagles’ 33-25 victory over the New York Giants.
Twenty-four players from Alabama high schools and colleges saw action in the holiday games.
Las Vegas Raiders 20, Kansas City Chiefs 14
Las Vegas trailed 7-3 when Raiders defensive tackle Bilal Nichols picked up a fumbled handoff in the Kansas City backfield and ran 8 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. On the Chiefs’ next snap, Las Vegas cornerback Jack Jones intercepted quarterback Patrick Mahomes and ran 33 yards to record a pick-six for the second game in a row. After the Chiefs scored with 2:42 to play, the Raiders ran out the clock.
Six players from Alabama high schools and college got on the field during the Las Vegas-Kansas City game:
· Raiders running back Ameer Abdullah (Homewood) ran for 11 yards on two carries, caught a 1-yard pass and made one tackle on special teams.
· Raiders cornerback Jakorian Bennett (McGill-Toolen) did not record any stats.
· Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson (Auburn) made both his field-goal attempts, connecting from 24 yards for the game’s first points and 35 yards as Las Vegas went ahead 20-7 with 24 seconds left in the third quarter. A mishandled snap kept Carlson from attempting the extra-point kick after the Raiders’ first touchdown, and after its second TD, Las Vegas went for 2.
· Chiefs defensive tackle Neil Farrell Jr., (Murphy) was designated as a game-day inactive.
· Raiders offensive lineman D.J. Fluker (Foley, Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.
· Raiders running back Josh Jacobs (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive. A quadriceps injury kept Jacobs out of the lineup for the second game in a row.
· Chiefs quarterback Chris Oladokun (Samford) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.
· Chiefs running back La’Mical Perine (Theodore) did not record any stats.
· Chiefs tight end Gerrit Prince (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.
· Chiefs wide receiver Justyn Ross (Central-Phenix City) had a 2-yard reception in his first action since Oct. 22. Ross returned from a six-game suspension imposed by the NFL.
· Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney (Blount) was designated as a game-day inactive. A hip injury kept Toney off the field.
· Chiefs offensive tackle Prince Tega Wanogho (Edgewood Academy, Auburn) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.
· Chiefs wide receiver Montrell Washington (Samford) did not record any stats. Kansas City elevated Washington from its practice squad to make him eligible to play.
· Raiders defensive tackle Byron Young (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.
Kansas City won six of its first seven games this season but came out of Monday’s contest at 9-6. Las Vegas improved to 7-8.
On Sunday, the Raiders visit the Indianapolis Colts at noon CST and the Chiefs host the Cincinnati Bengals at 3:25 p.m.
Philadelphia Eagles 33, New York Giants 25
Rookie cornerback Kelee Ringo’s interception in the end zone on the game’s final play put the lid on Philadelphia’s victory in a game they led 20-3 at halftime. A fumbled kickoff and a pick-six in the third quarter put the Giants back in the game before the Eagles settled down to break a three-game losing streak.
Fourteen players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the New York-Philadelphia game:
· Reed Blankenship (West Limestone) started at safety for the Eagles. Blankenship made six tackles.
· James Bradberry (Pleasant Grove, Samford) started at cornerback for the Eagles. Bradberry made three tackles and broke up one pass.
· Eagles linebacker Zach Cunningham (Pinson Valley) was designated as a game-day inactive. A knee injury kept Cunningham out of the lineup for the second straight game.
· Eagles guard Landon Dickerson (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive. Reports indicated Dickerson had surgery on Wednesday to repair a thumb injury.
· Eagles offensive lineman Jack Driscoll (Auburn) did not record any stats.
· Cor’Dale Flott (Saraland) started at nickelback for the Giants. Flott made one tackle.
· Giants center J.C. Hassenauer (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.
· Jalen Hurts (Alabama) started at quarterback for the Eagles. Hurts completed 24-of-38 passes for 301 yards with one touchdown and one interception and ran for 34 yards and one touchdown on eight carries. In his fourth 300-yard game of the season, Hurts threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver DeVonta Smith as Philadelphia took a 17-3 lead with 11:44 left in the first half. Hurts’ 1-yard plunge for the first points of the game was his 15th rushing touchdown of 2023, the most by a quarterback in one season in NFL history.

· Eagles cornerback Josh Jobe (Alabama) did not record any stats.
· Julio Jones (Foley, Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Eagles. Jones had a 5-yard reception.
· Xavier McKinney (Alabama) started at free safety for the Giants. McKinney shared the team lead with 10 tackles and recorded his first sack of the season.
· Eagles linebacker Nicholas Morrow (Huntsville) was designated as a game-day inactive. An abdominal injury kept Morrow out of the lineup.
· Giants offensive tackle Evan Neal (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.
· Giants defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches (Central-Phenix City) was designated as a game-day inactive. A knee injury kept Nunez-Roches off the field.
· Eagles cornerback Eli Ricks (Alabama) made one tackle.
· Giants cornerback Aaron Robinson (Alabama) is on reserve/physically unable to play.
· A’Shawn Robinson (Alabama) started at defensive tackle for the Giants. Robinson made three tackles, recorded one tackle for loss and broke up one pass.
· Darius Slayton (Auburn) started at wide receiver for the Giants. Slayton had three receptions for 90 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown as New York cut Philadelphia’s lead to 30-25 with 5:22 to play. The touchdown is the longest reception of Slayton’s career, surpassing a pair of 55-yarders.
· DeVonta Smith (Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Eagles. Smith had four receptions for 79 yards and one touchdown as he surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the season. Smith caught a 36-yard touchdown pass as Philadelphia took a 17-3 lead with 11:44 left in the first half.
· Eagles offensive lineman Tyler Steen (Alabama) did not record any stats.
· Eagles wide receiver Quez Watkins (Athens) did not start any stats.
Philadelphia moved to 11-4 to take a one-game lead on the Dallas Cowboys at the top of the NFC East standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. New York dropped to 5-10.
At noon Sunday, the Eagles host the Arizona Cardinals and the Giants host the Los Angeles Rams. Philadelphia and New York will square off again on the final day of the regular season on Jan. 7.
Baltimore Ravens 33, San Francisco 49ers 19
Baltimore trailed 5-3 when Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey picked off a pass by San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy in the 49ers’ backfield to start the Ravens on their 47-yard line with 14:16 left in the first half. Baltimore marched for a touchdown and led the rest of the way.
With a 13-12 lead, the Ravens ran off the game’s next 20 points. While San Francisco had two punts, an interception and a fourth-down failure to start the second half, Baltimore opened with two touchdowns and a field goal.
A former Hoover High School and Alabama standout, Humphrey made three tackles. In addition to his first interception of the 2023 season and 13th of his career, Humphrey broke up another pass. Humphrey got his interception on Monday night when teammate Brandon Stephens batted the football into the air.
In addition to Humphrey, three other players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Baltimore-San Francisco game:
· Ravens cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis (St. Paul’s Episcopal, Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.
· Ravens quarterback Malik Cunningham (Park Crossing) was designated as a game-day inactive.
· Ravens guard Tyrell Doss (Aliceville) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.
· Forty-Niners tight end Cameron Latu (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.
· Forty-Niners cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. (South Alabama) did not record any stats.
· Ravens guard Tashawn Manning (Auburn) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.
· Ravens outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon (Hoover) made one tackle on special teams. Baltimore elevated Moon from its practice squad to make him eligible to play.
· Michael Pierce (Daphne, Samford) started at nose tackle for the Ravens. Pierce made two tackles.
· Forty-Niners defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth (Murphy) is on the practice squad and eligible to play.
At 12-3, Baltimore holds a one-game lead over the Miami Dolphins in the race for the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs, a position that comes with a first-round bye and homefield advantage in the conference’s postseason.
The Ravens and Dolphins square off at noon CST Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
At 11-4, San Francisco now has the same record as the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles for the top spot in the NFC. The 49ers visit the Washington Commanders at noon Sunday.
