News, notes from AHSAA volleyball Elite Eight state championship tournament

The 53rd annual AHSAA Elite Eight volleyball state championship tournament starts on Tuesday with 56 teams competing for championships in seven classes.

Class 6A, 5A, 3A and 2A will play quarterfinal and semifinal matches at the Birmingham Crossplex on Tuesday with championships scheduled for the Bill Harris Arena on Wednesday.

Class 7A, 4A and 1A play quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Wednesday with title matches set for Thursday.

Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds for each class will be played on four courts at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Below are tidbits and notes from each class, followed by the complete schedule.

CLASS 7A

North Super Regional winner Bob Jones is making its second straight trip to the Elite Eight under coach Jenny Jarrett, who surpassed 200 wins in her second year as head coach.

Kennedy Vaughn has 499 kills (school record 1,000-plus career kills), 21 aces, 62 blocks and 117 digs while Meg Jarrett (UAB commit) has 576 digs (school record 2,000-plus career digs), 158 assists and 58 aces.

Riley Lovell has 787 assists (school record 3,000-plus career assists), 275 digs, 61 aces and 41 kills, Eliza Tyrrell (Montevallo commit) has 318 kills, 51 aces and 115 blocks and Rachel Mecklenburg (Wallace-Hanceville commit) has 252 digs, 499 assists, 242 kills and 38 aces.

South Super Regional winner McGill-Toolen Catholic has an impressive front row with Paris McQuirter, Emma Moore and Chelsea Daffin.

McQuirter (North Alabama commit) has 488 kills, 45 blocks, 24 aces and 82 digs while Moore (Auburn commit) has 373 kills, 107 blocks, 50 aces and 84 digs and Daffin has 353 kills, 56 blocks, 26 aces and 138 digs.

Juliet Galla is committed to Tulane.

Setter Mamie Fromdahl, playing in her third Elite Eight, is from a family of athletes. Sister Lillie played for the Dirty Dozen in 2017 and 2018 (state champions) and mom Melanie Adams Fromdahl was also a state champion at McGill-Toolen.

Setter Laura Boykin is also playing in her third Elite Eight while sister Amelia was part of the 2018 state champion team.

Thompson’s Olivia Kelly has over 1,000 assists this season, 1,800 in two years along with 100 career aces.

Abby Faith Campbell suffered a gruesome knee injury, missing half the season, but still has 500 career digs.

Chloe Mittlestadt has committed to Jacksonville State and Olivia Kelly will play at West Florida.

Coach Judy Green surpassed 1,000 career wins this season with college coaching stops at Montevallo, Alabama and Birmingham-Southern before spending the past nine seasons at Thompson.

The Warriors have earned four trips to the Elite Eight in the past nine years, including twice making the final four.

Enterprise has a couple of record-setting players in Jadyn Britton and Heather Holtz.

Britton has 475 kills this season (school record 1,345 career kills) with 260 digs, 48 aces and 38 blocks while Holtz has 896 assists (school record 3,107 career assist), 124 kills, 174 digs and 69 aces. Alivia Freeman has 310 kills and 98 blocks.

St. Paul’s coach Lisa Marston picked up career win No. 300 this season.

Clarissa Dupree has 468 kills (sixth in school history with 977 career kills), 45 aces, 46 blocks and 336 digs while Blake Ferguson has 660 digs (second in school history) and 86 aces, Sydney Conrad has 303 kills, 373 digs and 47 aces and Brooke Thuss has 119 blocks.

Thuss trained as a competitive gymnast and is the daughter of former professional hockey goaltender Chuck.

Janie Ford is a multiple state champion in track — mom Camille ran track at Virginia and is the track coach at St. Paul’s.

Hoover coach Amanda Wood picked up career win No. 300 this season at Guntersville’s Tournament of Champions. It’s her second trip to Elite Eight play, the first coming last season with the Bucs.

South Super Regional Volleyball

CLASS 6A

Bayside Academy coach Ann Schilling is the state’s all-time leader in career wins, surpassing 1,700 this season. She has a 1,725-444 record in 37 years of directing Bayside volleyball.

Setter Blakeley Robbins (Montevallo commit) broke 4,000 assists and has 1,204 assists this season with 151 kills, 61 aces, 283 digs 74 blocks.

Maysie Douglas surpassed 1,000 career kills and has 325 kills, 161 digs and61 aces while Hayley Robinson has 344 kills and 74 blocks this season.

Mary Katherine Whitehurst notched career dig No. 1,000 in super regional play.

Spanish Fort’s Alexis Belarmino (New Orleans commit) has 1,473 assists (3,302 career), 341 digs, 128 kills, 66 blocks and 39 aces.

Reece Varden has 578 kills (1,623 career), 111 blocks and 103 digs while Delaney Clough has 720 digs (1,449 career), 82 assists, 63 aces, and 463 receptions, Taylor Ishmael has 409 kills, 80 blocks and 78 digs and Carlyn McAllister has 349 kills, 492 digs, 73 aces and 547 receptions.

Fort Payne’s Cooper Garrett has 545 kills, 448 assists, 238 digs and 52 aces, Lydie Varnadore has 661 assists, 272 kills, 372 digs and 78 aces and Layla Kirby has 268 kills, 489 digs and 58 aces.

Shades Valley last won to the Elite Eight 22 years ago.

Jasmine Terry has 468 kills while Simone McCray has 302 digs after suffering a foot injury during January club volleyball. She played middle before the injury, but moved to Libero this season.

South Super Regional Volleyball

CLASS 5A

South Super Regional winner Montgomery Academy won 50-plus matches for only the second time in school history.

Addi Vinson has the school record for career assists with 3,661. Only a junior, Vinson has 1,345 assists this season.

Elle McBride has 1,390 career kills, 530 this season and Caroline McDaniel has 1,186 career kills, 350 this season.

North Super Regional winner Alexandria, coached by Whitney Welch, along with assistant Kelli Johnson, has guided the team to the championship tournament eight of 10 years leading the program.

Kailey Dickerson has 68 kills, 26 digs and 7 aces in winning the North Super Regional — the first regional title under Welch — while Devan White had 50 digs and 4 aces. The duo is committed to Wallace-Hanceville.

Other leaders were Eryn Spradley with 45 kills, 10 digs and 4 aces, Christian Hess 60 assists and 6 aces, Ava Johnson 31 digs and 2 aces and Kirsten Heathcock 4 kills and 2 blocks.

Both Ava Boyll and Kylie Graham of Lawrence County are three-year starters, all three years to the Elite Eight.

Boyll has 768 kills (1,680 career), 57 aces, 78 blocks and 419 digs and Grahams has 789 assists (1,848 career), 255 kills, 59 aces and 327 digs.

Arab players have posted impressive career numbers.

Laney Kelley has 1,305 kills, Sami Kate Hudson has 946 kills, 140 aces and 1,463 digs, Marissa Pope has 1,092 digs and Millie Lackey has 1,350 assists.

Sylacauga earned its second trip to the tournament this season, the other coming in 2021.

The Aggies went undefeated in area play, won the Talladega County Tournament (Ashley Murphy MVP, Makasia Crawford and Sophie Harshberger All-County), captured the Glencoe Tournament title and won the Area 8 tournament (Catherine Price MVP, Anna B Shaw and Ja’Niya Garrett All-Area).

Sophie Harshberger has 114 aces and 433 digs while Shaw has 618 assists, 222 digs and 103 aces, Catherine Price has 239 kills, 354 assists, 236 digs, 99 aces and 16 blocks and Makasia Crawford has 106 kills and 37 blocks.

Brewer’s Cheyenne Lucas surpassed 1,000 career kills during regionals and Jacey Atkinson broke 2,500 career assists this season.

Blakely Faulkner has 91 aces, 234 kills, 509 digs and 79 assists this season and Sarah Brown has 192 kills and 93 blocks.

CLASS 4A

North Super Regional champion Madison County is making the fourth straight trip to the Elite Eight.

Ava Gustafson has 349 kills, 315 blocks and 85 aces while Addy Gustafson has 1,158 assists and 359 digs, Shelby Hill has 440 kills and 454 digs and Laylah Sanders has 73 aces, 305 kills and 428 digs.

Deshler’s Ava Siegel has 715 kills, 395 digs, 87 assists, 45 aces and 63 blocks while Cooper Thompson has 287 digs, 10 assists, 457 kills, 17 aces and 33 blocks. Makayla Willingham recovered from injury to post 233 digs, 831 assists, 114 kills, 51 aces and 43 blocks.

UMS-Wright is making its first appearance in the Elite Eight since 2015 and coach Carolyn Houston picked up career win No. 285 at Super Regionals.

Noel Freeman has 380 kills and 71 blocks while Addison Prine (Nichols State commit) has 470 digs (1,000-plus career), 67 aces and 65 assists. Josie Jaye has 203 kills, 53 aces, 55 blocks and 62 digs and Chandler Thomas has 36 aces, 180 kills, 24 blocks, 251 assists and 303 digs.

LAMP set a new team record for wins this season with 28, surpassing 24 wins last seasons. The Tigers also earned their fourth Elite Eight appearance in the past five years.

Jailyn Dixon leads LAMP with 593 kills (surpassed 1,000 career kills this season), 209 digs, 67 aces and 34 blocks. Grayson Dickert has 398 assists 155 digs and 44 aces and Kayden Callahan has 59 aces and 226 digs.

Cherokee County coach Tiffany Rieger is making her fifth trip to the Elite Eight, twice as a coach and three times as a player. She previously led Cedar Bluff to the tournament in 2011 and played in the tournament 1997-1999 at Cherokee County.

Macy Lea has 1,027 assists — her 2,221 career assists is approaching the school record of 2,580 — adding 202 digs, 38 blocks, 38 aces and 72 kills while Nevaeh Gaidurgis has 484 kills, 65 aces, 52 blocks, 262 digs and 29 assists.

Ellisan Givens has 558 digs, 1,187 in her career, breaking the school record set by Rieger.

It’s the sixth trip to the Elite Eight for T.R. Miller.

Madelynn Sasser has 269 kills, 196 digs and 34 aces while Peyton Boling has 164 digs and Claire Smith has 38 aces, 140 digs and 30 assists.

AHSAA Volleyball 3A State Championship

CLASS 3A

Plainview setter Ali Price (Wallace State commit) has over 5,000 career assists with 1,266 this season along with 315 digs and 53 aces.

Aubriella Hairston has 323 kills and 98 blocks, Faith Odom has 62 aces, 379 kills, 32 blocks and 240 digs, Kami Sanders has 68 aces, 348 kills, 267 digs (surpassed 1,000 career kills and digs this season) and 28 blocks and Chloe Hatch has 18 aces, 258 kills, 84 blocks and 313 digs.

Mobile Christian set the school record with 42 wins this season.

Key players include Melaina Haines with 636 kills, 113 aces, 27 blocks, 528 assists and 413 digs while Melissa Patel has 617 digs and 54 aces and Ella Manning has 73 aces, 254 kills, 75 blocks and 113 digs.

Prattville Christian is making its fifth trip to the Elite Eight, fourth in the past five years, including last year’s state championship.

Baylee Rogers is the first player in program history to surpass 2,000 career assists (no other volleyball player has broken 2,000 in any category). She has 942 assists, 286 digs, 112 aces, 103 kills and 8 blocks this season. She also ranks third in AHSAA history with 22 aces in one match.

Emma Cate Carter has 401 kills, 90 aces, 24 blocks, 273 digs and 17 assists and Leah Cate Wilson has 274 kills, 59 blocks, 41 digs, 8 assists and 13 aces.

Coach Kaylon Cantrell surpassed win No. 300 with the program on Sept 30.

Geraldine has one state championship, beating Bayside Academy in semifinal play in 2001, with four Elite Eight trips in the past five years, including a runnerup and semifinal finish under coach Renee Bearden — 210 wins during the period.

Brooklyn Hall has 102 aces, 602 kills (1,500-plus career) and 220 digs while Kentlei Rogers has 57 aces, 381 kills and 109 digs, Jaycee Berrong has 64 aces, 57 kills, 1,108 assists and 178 digs and Hallie Burns has 57 aces, 52 assists and 592 digs (1,000-plus career).

Glencoe is making its second trip to the Elite Eight, the other in 2018, under coach Jamie Barkley, who’s next win will be No. 250 of her career.

Abi Bunt missed her junior season after a shoulder injury in softball, but came back this season to lead the team in assists with 524, earning career assist No. 1,000 in North Super Regional play. She also leads our team in aces with 54 and will play college softball at UT-Chattanooga.

Emma Croy is one of four hitters with 200-plus kills (254), adding 393 digs and will play softball at Gadsden State. Ali Jo Amos has 225 kills and 47 blocks and Kaelyn Hollis has 622 digs, 32 aces and 67 assists.

It’s the first trip to the Elite Eight for Westbrook Christian, which became part of the Big Oak Ranch ministry in 1990.

Raegan Harrell has 378 kills, 37 aces and 194 digs while Raylee Neal has 767 assists, 152 digs and 60 aces, Landri Lipscomb has 261 kills, 67 blocks and 208 digs and Marley Cox has 174 kills, 283 digs, 24 blocks and 63 aces.

Walter Wellborn is making its first trip to the Elite Eight since 2004.

The Panthers’ Calla Hayes has 433 kills (800 career) while Gracie Lewis has 918 assists (over 2,500 career).

CLASS 2A

Several Pleasant Valley players have reached career milestones.

Lily Henry has 1,494 kills and 1,440 digs while Allie Bryant has 1,124 kills, 1,044 assists and 2,484 digs. Maddie Schwabe has 506 kills, 1,891 assists and 1,043 digs.

G. W. Long is making its seventh straight trip to the Elite Eight.

Lexington is making its 36th appearance in the state championship tournament with 27 trips to the final four and seven titles.

Charli Turner has 1,137 assists, 465 digs, 51 aces and 100 kills while Reanna Springer has 429 digs, 373 kills and 127 aces and Alex Howard has 457 kills and 82 blocks.

Over the past 10 years, Donoho has won three state championships with two runnerups and made seven Elite Eight appearances.

Sam Wakefield played libero on the 2020 state championship team, setter for the 2021 state runnerup and 2022 championship teams and is at outside hitter this season. She has 1,752 career digs (471 this season), 2,348 career assists, 223 career aces (59 this season) and 266 kills this season.

Sand Rock has 11 previous trips to the Elite Eight with seven final four appearances. The Wildcats have a big senior class, seven with three college offers.

Katelyn St.Clair has 839 kills, 431 digs and 78 aces with a school record for single season kills and career kills with 1,961. She hasn’t committed yet, but the multi-sport athlete will play college sports somewhere.

Cousin Rylin St.Clair (Gadsden State commit) has 1,441 assists (2,570 career), 323 digs and 86 aces while Chloe Stephens has 857 digs (2.046 career) and 85 aces.

Coach Lisa Bates and assistant Johnny Howell have guided the Wildcats for 22 years and earned the 800th win together during the area tournament

Washington County posted the most wins in school history with 28 and won the county championship and the Area 3 title with coach Farrah Warr guiding the Bulldogs to the Elite Eight for the third straight season.

Shaquondra Holcombe led the team with 351 kills while Tymiah Burroughs has 275 kills and 254 digs, Laiken Coaker has 275 assists, Mia White 273 assists and Mia White 84 aces.

It’s Wicksburg’s first time to earn a spot in the Elite Eight tournament.

Bella Hicks (Wallace-Hanceville commit) has 88 aces, 82 kills, 585 assists, 23 digs and 38 blocks, Lana Carpenter has 26 aces, 146 kills, 10 digs and 77 blocks and Emily Espinosa has 195 kills and 107 blocks.

CLASS 1A

North Super Regional winner Addison has won three straight volleyball state championships and 14 in school history. The Bulldogs have earned a spot in the championship match every year since 2002 except a final four loss to Bayside Academy in 2007.

Bailee Ory has surpassed 1,000 career digs while Hadley Butler has 1,000-plus career digs and assists and Dacey Baker has 1,000-plus career kills. All three seniors are seeking a fourth straight state title.

Spring Garden has an impressive front row with Ace Austin (daughter of coach Ricky Austin), Chloe Rule and Olivia Law.

Austin has 684 kills, Rule has 356 kills and 111 blocks and Law has 229 kills and 82 blocks while Avery Steward sets up the offense with 1,300 assists

University Charter won its second straight South Super Regional title in only the fourth season of varsity play.

Record-breaking was the norm this season as Brinkli Wood has school records in aces with 136 and kills with 291 kills, adding 246 digs. Emory Pezent has 561 assists (school record), 104 aces, 90 kills and 133 digs while Ella Grace Larkin has 43 aces, 281 kills and 223 digs, Ava LaCoste has 81 aces, and 326 digs (school record) and Maddy Gullahorn has 62 aces, 271 kills, 38 blocks and 53 digs.

Athens Bible coach EA Winland has guided the Trojans to five Elite Eight appearances – three times to the final four – with a state title in 2014 when she was 21 years old and runnerup in 2018. As a player, she led the Trojans to the 2009 Class 1A state championship and was selected MVP.

Claire Holt is the team’s only senior and has 274 kills (803 career), 134 blocks (318 career), 180 digs and 72 aces. Brooke Blakely has 143 kills and 43 blocks and Anna Beth Burns has 426 assists.
