Early Sunday morning, New York Jets cornerback Tae Hayes was arrested by the Trinity Police, got booked into the Morgan County Jail on second-degree possession of marijuana and bonded out after an 81-minute stay.

On Monday afternoon, the Jets were as brief in announcing, without elaboration, they had released Hayes.

A former Decatur High School standout who played at Appalachian State, Hayes spent 14 weeks on the Jets’ practice squad and played in one game in the 2023 season.

Hayes got on the field for 13 defensive snaps and 10 special-teams plays and recorded two tackles in New York’s 20-14 victory over Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 15.

Hayes re-signed with the Jets on Jan. 8.

Possession of marijuana for personal use is classified as second-degree. It is punishable by up to one year in jail and up to a $6,000 fine.

Since Hayes entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2019, he has played in 14 regular-season games with six teams and been on the roster of three other clubs.

Hayes also played with the Birmingham Stallions in 2022, and he helped them win their first USFL championship.
